The naming of the different flavors of Lightroom has generated a lot of confusion and continues to do so as people just call their version 'Lightroom' without letting us know which kind they're talking about. The system is broken. How can it be fixed?

I posted this in another thread but that thread seems to have ended so it's probably worth starting a new thread and not hijacking an old one.

What would be the best name for LR to reduce confusion?

Lightroom Cloud/Lightroom Local? (Lightroom Cloud would get confused with LrC)
Lightroom Here/Lightroom There? (Inaccurate)
Lightroom New/Lightroom Old? (Pejorative connotation)
Lightroom Classic/Lightroom Hip?
Lightroom/LightCloud?
Lightroom Swag/Lightroom Cheugy?

Or would it be better to find two completely different names, at least one of which does not contain 'Lightroom'?

Of course UHH will not make the final decision but hopefully some people at Adobe are watching.

Seems people cannot resist the temptation to hijack thread...what they use, who does what. Anyoo, I like your naming protocols..but add the mobile part of it.

Classic
Cloud
Mobile

Yet another solution in search of a problem. And just what is it that confuses you about two (two?) flavors of the product?

One frequent point of confusion on this forum is whenever someone posts a question or problem with "Lightroom" and it's unclear which product they're referring to.

Perhaps we should follow this guy's advice.

How confusing would it be for those using the cloud version yet not using the cloud. :) Adobe seems to have a naming issue that keeps biting them in the ass. Would have called it LRL for lightroom lite. It is a subset

True…but it’s like Apple when they deprecated their Pages, Numbers, and Keynote apps in favor of the same named ones that are common across macOS, iOS, and iPadOS…the py lost some features initially so that the iCloud sync versions could ship but the lost capabilities have all been restored and for most people they a4e plenty good enough for what they need word, number, and slide processors for. LR has gotten more and more of the lost features and at this point it’s almost good enough to use assuming one either only clouds some photos or pays more to Adobe for storage. My guess is that in another year or so the feature sets will be essentially equivalent and Classic will be relegated to maintenance but no new features mode…particular if the new local tab gets caught up as right now it’s a bit less capable than the cloud tab IIRC. The only hing LR needs to be equivalent for most people is the plug in and external editor stuff…and some of the more exotic open in PS options…but since open in PS exists the basic architecture for plugins is there…and the plugins may need modifying to work in the iPadOS and iOS versions unless they only add that to the desktop version…and since Topaz and others don’t have an iPad or iPhone version perhaps that will be the answer in the short term. Some of the more rabid LR proponents talk about their cloud being a backup…which is a bit disingenuous to me…I’m sure Adobe has perfectly adequate backup systems in place…but a backup totally out of the user hands is anathema to anybody serious about IT or backing up their data…a cloud backup is part of a backup strategy but not its entirety.

I’ve seen it referred to as dumbed when Lightroom in a lot of places…but as I said they needed to ship it and then improve…and getting it into the new codebase was probably the right business decision…especially as people like us that use cameras that aren’t phones are getting to be a pretty small portion of the photo taking population.

Adobe is not unique. Win11 defaults to using the cloud; I believe most people don’t realize where their stuff is being stored - until MicroSoft tells them that the “free” OneDrive limit has been reached, and demand more cash. I got a SSD with my new computer and intentially stored stuff on it.

OneDrive is not essential to the operation of Windows. There are good reasons to disable it at setup.

You’ll notice I use a SSD.

I have not kept track of the price of an SSD relative to the old spinners but they used to be significantly more expensive. For most purposes, the speed increase is not essential to the operation of your computer. Speed helps for loading programs, not so much for loading data unless the data are used interactively. As a replacement for OneDrive I suspect that speed does not add much to the value.

And disabling OneDrive probably doesn't require replacement with additional storage media. I am not aware of any essential functionality of OneDrive.

The computers I looked at had smaller HDs because they were assuming data would be kept on OneDrive.
