I work side-by-side with Catholic Charities and THEY work side-by-side with Lutheran Relief, Salvation Army, etc. Generally speaking, recognizable religion-based charities are FAR more efficient, often getting 95% of your dollar into action.

The one I cover on my show was called, at the last minute, by the State Department to help with a large number of Afghan refugees being housed at Ft. McCoy in Wisconsin. They came with almost nothing.

CC borrowed and bought sewing machines and BOLTS of black cloth to allow the women to make appropriate clothes. They set up traditional tea rooms and got soccer balls & toys for the kids.

Every April 15th, CC helps tons of people who got behind on their power bills when power shut-offs are banned in the local winters. They also do free credit counseling to help folks budget.

They do not care if you are Catholic, atheist or none of the above. They are also the largest supplier of low cost housing in the USA.

It is said, that one of the greatest dangers to society is misinformation. Please check the link below, Charity Navigator, a non profit organization that rates other non profits gave UNICEF a very high grade. Whenever something like this comes across the internet, I always double (or triple) check it because typically it is false.

We arrived to Corpus christi Texas in 71 at the age of 16 and moved into a one room furnished house. 6 months later we moved to a unfurnished shotgun house so we needed some furniture. Tha ladies at the church told us the salvation army which was 3 blocks away would help.for $300 we filled up the whole house.ever since then I have never passed a kettle .when. we go shopping and they are collecting I donate a dollar. If I hit 10 different places I donate to each one all through the season.they came through for me and I will continue to come through for them.

"...we moved to an unfurnished shotgun house..."

That must be a Texas thing. 🤣

I also drop something into those kettles, but beware of imitations. Some guys get a Santa suit, a bell, and a kettle, and they earn extra money for themselves.

Have you read all the negative comments about it?

I assume negative about everything, until proven otherwise. That's why I give to charities that I know.

The Salvation Army also provides housing to those who have nowhere to go.

Yes, they do. Where there is room. Like any other organization that provides shelter, availability is an issue.

Yes a shotgun house in very small.it is about 20 ft wide and about 50 to 60 feet long.you have your living room, an entrance into the next room which is your bedroom ,( sort of speak)good for 2 full size beds on on each side of the entrance , your next entrance, the kitchen , on one side is the stove and coutertop and cabinets on the otherwise of the entrance is you dining room table and further back is your washer but no dryer , then your backdoor but before you go out the back door you have the bathroom with a toilet and a small shower.it's called a shotgun house cause you could run in the front door all the way down the middle of the house and out the back door (if no one was in your way) in a matter of seconds.

you could stand at the front door of such a house and fire a shotgun straight through to the back door—hence the name.

They are prevalent throughout the southeast... with their design you could stand at the front door of such a house and fire a shotgun straight through to the back door—hence the name.
