I am changing my answer to 19. Paradolia led me to see 4 table legs instead of the actual 3.

Hi there puzzlers - have a go at this one - suggest an answer but DON'T give your method (I want to keep people guessing for a bit) - I'll post the solution in a few days time!

Enjoy

Been too long since math class
I knew there was an "order of operations", just couldn't remember it.

Nobody reads that far. They just spew an uneducated USWAG after reading the OPs post on page 1 and run away, never to return, afraid to bask in the error of their ways.

THANKS EVERYONE FOR HAVING A GO! - sadly some gave out the method but hey ho, that's life. THE CORRECT ANSWER IS...............19
(The order of operations is part of the key so the multiplication is the first bit to do on the answer final line) - then you have to note that the value of the table is the number of legs so tables with 4 legs = 4, table (in final row has 3 legs so = 3). Then the clock's value changes its value to equal the time shown (=5 on last row). If it's of any consolation it's easy to miss (at first sight) the table legs and the clock time.
THANKS EVERYONE FOR HAVING A GO! - sadly some gave... (show quote)

Do not agree with silly chart. With no brackets or other distractions, operations go left to right, add then multiply. Answer is 35. Unless you are from a country that writes right to left.

Wrong, Wrong, Wrong. I guess you weren't educated in the USA ?? - OR you're not old enough to have gotten a decent education. All this 'new math' stuff set our country back many decades. PEMDSA has been the accepted order of operations for centuries. Regard this as a 'teachable moment' and learn something.

Wrong, Wrong, Wrong. I do it my way. I'd get out my old school books but Mom threw them away 60 years ago when I joined the Military.

Hey Sargent (ohh - ?Private - did I promote you?) - This is the Colonel (26 years). There is no 'your way', there is only the 'Company' way. We have no need of books any more - not since Wikipedia and ChatGPT. Again - this is a teachable moment. Free education lest you appear uneducated and thus discredit your unit.

If you ignore the conventions of mathematics there's no point doing any calculations.
'Your way' could be to use a - symbol to mean add...

Guys, guys - what's going on? I posted an interesting puzzle (as I do from time to time) and it gets 90% great reactions from members who enter into the spirit of the thing and have ago. Now that's great and why not, win or lose who cares? it's not a competition - it's just a puzzle I share for your enjoyment - it's just a bit of fun and because I enjoyed the puzzle I decided to share it with my fellow site members. Because I often don't get it right first time I am reminded of my days in school and university (a long time ago) and often surprise myself either by getting it right or reminding me where I might have gone wrong. Adults often scan a page and don't look in detail as a child might so we often assume and miss the detail - this post received a lot of interest so I'm happy. Merry Christmas or/and Compliments of the Season.
