The old "Jot'em Down Grocery Stores". We also had two, so the competition kept the price reasonable.
I remember that Granny would walk up to the counter, take a provided pad of paper and a pencil, and write down what she wanted, then hand it to a clerk who would retrieve the items from the shelves, ring you up, and bag them.
You could not go past the counter to shop for yourself. Besides, there was no "selection of brands" like you have today, you took what they had on hand.
There was also a "Butcher Shop" close by for custom-cut meats.
Sometimes Granny would call the "Jot'em Down Grocery Store" on the corner, dictate a few things, tell him to put them on her account, and then send me to pick the items up.
When the "Kroger Super Market" opened the old "Jot'em Down Grocery Stores" closed up almost overnight.
Thanks for the memories Jerry, they make me . . . .

PS: I also remember Mother telling me about the "RR Company Store" where you made your mark and the amount was deducted from your RR pay.
And there was no competition for the company store. But, that is a subject of another post.
The old "Jot'em Down Grocery Stores". We... (show quote)

The only jotting I remember was when the owner would write the prices on the bag and add them up instantly. I can imagine a problem reading the writing of the customers.

Yes, company stroes were criminal.

Ah for the good old days in the Philadelphia area. You ordered a hoagie. It was prepared on the spot. The only option was hot or sweet peppers. You got what they made and liked it!

That? Possibly.
But maybe more of implementing the new gee-whiz-bang technology that the "younger" people devour.

Last night after an outing to see Christmas lights, we stopped at Steak & Shake. At the "new" versions of the restaurants, over half the menu is gone, one must order from a kiosk, no waiters, no condiments on the tables, only three employees, dirty tables, etc.

Note to self: Never, ever eat at Steak & Shake again. It used to be one of my favorite so-called fast food places to eat. Quote the raven, nevermore (apologies to E.A.Poe).

I won't be having to worry about it. The closest location to me is in Victorville, CA, 244 miles away. Even back when I lived in the LA area Victorville was probably over 40 miles away! Not to say that I have not driven thru Victorville on my way to places in the Mojave Desert. I wonder what customer service will go bye bye next?

Bi product of minimum wage increases and finding reliable help.
I believe you will be seeing more and more of this.
We enjoyed going for breakfast at Denny’s pre pandemic. Could get 2 breakfests for a little over $20 with tip. Last time we went was over $30 plus tip.
Eating at home much more now.

Something at play here. We have noticed in our small city (~126k), that the restaurants have no one sitting in them, and there are hardly any cars going through the drive thru. Of course that depends on day and hour of day but at the usual lunch and dinner times the drive throughs are empty.

Some assumptions can be made, eating out has become too expensive, the food value or quality is not there, people modified their eating because of the lockdowns they eat at home, they opt for home food delivery.

Some of our large chain restaurants are closing their doors because of no business. Sure makes me wonder.

My son in law is a firefighter/paramedic in Victorville. Not surprising, he is in one of the busiest fire stations in the State of California and US. Between medical calls/overdoses, accidents on US Highway 15 and fires of all kinds, he rarely sits. He averages 3-5 structure fires a shift and inordinate number of fentanyl overdoses.

I feel the same way about Taco Bell now. I went to one recently and had to order that way. my order had an error and I had to go back to the counter for the drink I wasn't given. Boo on Taco Bell.

Right Jerry. Unfortunate signs of the times. Less service, but the companies want more profit for the shareholders. I remember a time, things were for the betterment of the company, not just the shareholders.

I think Olive Garden has a little menu/pay "mini-kiosk" at the tables.....
I wonder if all Darden restaurants do that now.

I certainly don’t think of Olive Garden as a “better” restaurant.

The menu kiosk like the DIY check out has the advantage that I can customize the order without confusing the person who takes order. The self checkout let me pay with the kind of bills I want and get the change back the way I want without confusing the cashier.
For example if I want a hamburger with onion, lettuce, tomato and manyonaise but no pickle, no mustard and no ketchup and a fry with ketchup and a Fanta Orange zero sugar. It would be right.

No pickle, no mustard? What kind of heathen are you.
Also I’ve not seen a kiosk yet that supported any kind of cash payment.

Lol now if they make a mistake its your fault

Actually now if they make a mistake your order is documented. If the waiter wrote it down wrong they could claim it’s what you asked for.

The shortage of staff in restaurants is not just limited to fast food places. Potential employees can make more by staying home and collecting unemployment and other benefits and be better off than accepting a job that pays minimum wage or a little better. These type of jobs offered by restaurants are not intended to be jobs that support a family but are entry level jobs that for people just starting their work career. The solution to this type of problem is to get government out of the workplace.

Let’s not turn this political and get it sent to the attic. Then I would have to go off on how misinformed you are and remind you how bad it was before government got involved in the workplace.

That is exactly why I don't want to deal with a person who would ask the same question as you do.
