Where better to go for medical advice than a photography forum?

I was talking to a friend yesterday, and he said that he canceled his annual physical because he didn't get the blood test. He didn't want to get a blood test because he said he had been eating a lot of sweets lately, and he didn't want to get a false result.

I didn't think it worked that way. If you ate an entire bag of candy and had the test immediately after, I can imagine that skewing the test results, but I suspect the sugar level evens out over time.

My doctor's office now does blood tests, so it's very convenient.

So, is this guy just afraid of needles, or is there some validity to his fears.

Yep. Eating prior to blood work will spike the readings. I wasn't told that blood work was going to be part of the visit so I forgot to study (fast) & flunked the test.

As your personal pharmacist, diabetes and heart disease go hand in hand and have become more prevalent in recent years.
It is important to have a doctor’s visit as soon as possible. If you haven’t been taking care of your self, the test results will show it. You could try to skew the results but the results will be off. It is best to take the bad news and move forward. If you smoke it is a bad habit. Worst of all, it will catch up with you in time. If you eat the bad foods not only will it spoil your appetite (like mom said) it will catch up with you in time. If you fail at exercise your body has a bad way of telling you you should have at least a walk daily, nightly or you will need a vacation.

Don’t be afraid of the bad test results. They are a hand reaching out of the darkness to help you move forward and live longer.

If your diagnosed as diabetic with diet, exercise and medication you can help yourself to a better life. If you are hypertensive, you can overcome it with diet, exercise and medication. Your pharmacist can gel you to a better life.

As I mentioned before, if it is an annual test you do not need to be concerned about what you eat in the days preceding the test.

A Fasting Blood Sugar Test is often part of an annual physical exam. If it is, you better fast 8 to 10 hours before it takes place.

If you don't like needles, you're really, really gonna' dislike repeated eye surgery, amputations, and all the other medical miracles diabetes will introduce you to. Many people don't pick up on the consequences of inaction. There's only one thing worse than knowing you have a serious disease and that's *not* knowing that you have a serious disease. Just got my labs done yesterday morning and you could have knocked me over with a feather when I checked the website earlier today and the results were in. Wow! (On a Sunday) WTG Quest! Everything is good except blood glucose which was 107. I can temper that less-than-ideal number with a good one since he also ordered a1c this time which was 4.7 so... it's time to start watching the carbs a little better. I lost a lot of weight several times over the years, but this time after the diabetes scare I've kept it off with diet and exercise for over six years. I tend to believe that the last part scares people as much as needles... having to live a healthy lifestyle.

A serum blood test using a glucometer can keep your daily sugar in check. So can a blood pressure machine. But unless you are a physician, you will only know a momentary result. But your doctor or a hospital prime care clinic can put the train on the right track. Now is not too late.

Recent fat and sugar consumption patterns are almost irrelevant if the blood is drawn when fasting. Serum glucose spikes when blood is drawn close to a meal, sugar heavy or not. If an individual has undiagnosed diabetes, the serum glucose level will be extremely high when not fasting. The A1C level is a better indicator of diabetes if the serum glucose numbers are near normal when fasting. Fat intake can also be altered by a recent meal. The other tests will remain the same. A non fasting test is still better than none, especially if near normal.

For someone with insulin resistance, the blood sugar takes a lot longer to reduce, after eating lots of high glycemic index calories.

I measure blood sugar regularly and have seen this effect in my readings.

If the op's friend is concerned, then he probably knows he needs to monitor his diet.

A full bag of chips can have lingering effects on my blood sugar for 2 or 3 days.

Candy is not going to affect bloodwork for the most part. If you are measuring blood sugar, simply fasting the night before should do it. And many doctors do another test for blood glucose called a Hemoglobin A1C. For that you don't need to fast at all

Being a diabetic since 1979 I know that as a rule of thumb, 15 grams of carbohydrate will usually raise a diabetics
glucose level 50 points. If the person does not have diabetes it may rise temporarily but it will stabilize.
Depending on who you talk to. Some experts consider readings of 80 to 100 to be normal. Age is also a factor.
There are glucometers available for low cost. He could purchase one to give him occasional readings. I think that he
doesn't want his finger stuck. With the lancets that doctors use the discomfort in minimal.

I currently use a CGM (continuous glucose monitor) which will give me my glucose reading anytime I ask for it with a phone app.

So, is this guy just afraid of needles, or is there some validity to his fears.

It is a game too many play: It’s called denial. While one of the results of a blood test is glucose level the more important on is A1C which is your glucose over time, that is the number they use to determine diabetes. A score over 6 indicates a movement toward diabetes and can, for most of us if caught early enough, be controlled with good eating and exercise habits. Been a diabetic for 15 years and still controlled with good health practices.

If he is like a certain person I know, then the blood test is a red herring. He/she doesn't want an annual physical because he/she has ignored his/her health for the last year, especially in regards to diet and exercise, and knows that the doctor will see this and tell him/her what he/she already knows, to control his/her eating habits and exercise.

A1C will tell on you for last 30 days how your intake has been.
