With a 7d I use a 18-400 Tamron lens which for my photos is a great. I shoot Airshows and Landscape mostly. And don’t want to worry about getting dust or dirt on the sensor. I have read that at extreme settings this lens looses some of the sharpness but it is good enough for me. I am not going to enlarge my photos where this would be a problem, and it is 1/3 the size of my 150-600 Tamron. Also I can still hand hold it steady enough to get good pictures. Sorry about the rambling but I think that you have my story.

That is a good choice if you shoot Sony. But not made in Canon EF mount.

And the OP has Canon. Your recommended lens is ONLY in Sony mount so it does not help her at all.

Went on Alaska cruise 40th anniversary - 25 years ago! I never used such long distance lenses. If I did it again I would take my trusty 18-135 on my 80D. There are a lot of things close on like native American sites that you'll be in or near.

We're going to Alaska in May '24. I have a Canon 90D and am curious as to what length lens I should get. My choices are 100-400mm or 150-600. My main concern is the weight of the 150-600mm, around 3.5-4lbs. We won't be doing much walking as we both have mobility issues. I'm looking at Sigma or Tamron lenses. Thanks

We will also be taking an Alaska Cruise this coming May. This will be our 4th Alaska cruise. Your 100-400 will be great for taking pictures from the ship or on a whale watching excursion. I would highly recommend a wide angle to mid zoom lens for photos on board the ship and in ports as there are quite a few things to see in in many of the ports and the scenery is fantastic. Another option is a good point and shoot that fits in your pocket like the Sony RX100.

I have done a lot of cruising and would recommend the 100-400 on your 90D. If you try to use something like the 150-600 and a unipod you will not only get in trouble with the other guest (sometimes it gets crowded in areas of the ship). You also will not want to have your camera touching anything on the ship because it will pickup vibrations of the ship. If you hold the camera your body will act as a shock absorber. The tripod or unipod along with the 150-600 will amplify the ships movements.
