You can link a page (or video) on almost any site to a post in UHH. However, Lots of folks' malware paranoia prevents them from following links. Sad...

I was thinking of an embeded player right off in the UHH page with button controls.
Similar to autoplaying video adverts that we get within the pages.

That together with some visual updates and direct page selection as we had before, may spice up the site.

Amature Photographers and Volunteer Firefighters are getting smaller in numbers. Years ago, there was a lot more better built camera choices and Volunteer Fire Depts had a waiting list of people who wanted to join.
Young people today, don't seem to want to do either. They don't realize how photography can help a person as they age and being a volunteer firefighter helps your community and keeps you active. I'm 65 and proof of both.

I used to do a lot of volunteering before.

After a while, different reasons such as freetime, location, my age, politics, internal squables and younger replacement hell bent on using the club for their own personal use just kinda push me off and out.
Started with the Boyscouts, then to Ham radio, to local Emergency Rescue Responder (where we learned and worked along side of the firefighters) up to teaching less privilaged individuals via our Embassy. Even had a few security stints for concert/events and actual stage acting performance to raise church money.

Been there, done that, happy to give my share.
Most days I reserve for myself now

I'm in the Northeast and even the paid departments are having a difficult time recruiting. In my area, the neighboring paid/volunteer departments for years had have Mutual Aid agreements that are even more important today.
I have a Chronic Illness, so my firefighting days are over. Therefore I joined the Fire Police. Heck, at 65, my firefighting days would be over anyway.
Regarding photography, Its helped my cognitive issues improve by exercising my mind to think harder about my settings (and composition since I can no longer climb up/down hills) In one respect, it has made me a better photographer since I'm not able to get the compositions that I had become too comfortable with.
Photography, over time, has also helped improve the distance I can walk because it keeps me out walking almost everyday (in nature) instead of just sitting at home.
I went from walking a Quarter mile, up to 2+ miles before I can no longer stand. As a Fire cop, I can stand at a road closure for over 3 hours.
It's sad but the majority of young people today, don't want to Think or Work.
I'm glad I grew up when I did.

I live in the country. When the local fire department was looking to recruit several years ago, I offered to volunteer as a fire cop directing traffic & helping with comms. withmy emergency communications training, since I have lung issues & could not actually fight fires. They said they were only interested in EMT-B or above who were willing to train as paramedics. Understandable, I suppose, but having a fire cop on scene could free up a full-blown firefighter or EMT. I am a member of a first responder group where my emergency communications skills help free up the EMT’s to do their job.

P. S.: I think a lot of this reluctance to use volunteers in paid fire/Ems organization is due to liability & lawsuit implications.

Do you think it is possible to attract younger members to UHH? Or is that a hopeless cause? What would it take?

Yes, it is possible, I think.

I used to be in the local camera club and most of the members were older people. There were some younger people too though, in their 30s and thereabouts. However, I quit the club in 2018, but I still keep an eye on the happenings and over the past couple of years some of the oldies (people older than I am) have gone into rest homes or passed away, and a lot of new and much younger members have joined the club. So they are out there.

And a lot of young people seem to be buying mirrorless cameras now, and many want to share their work.

Also, Instagram is very popular with younger photographers. So if Ugly Hedgehog was to set up an Instagram feed to use as promotion to attract more young people then that might just work. However, one of the things I find with photography and age is that subject matter seems to be more important to some young people than what great photography matters. So on an Instagram feed you need to have, I think, both well-photographed subjects as well as genres that younger people are more attracted to. Some of the genres that seem to attract young photographers' interest are the likes of Astrophotography, long exposures (city light trails, soft water waterfalls and the likes), selfies, and fashion, to name a few. (That is far from a complete list, of course.)

I have an Instagram feed and I have around 2,500 followers there, I think, or something like that. I used to have a lot more than that but I didn't bother with Instagram for over a year at one stage and so I lost a lot of followers during that time. It does take time and effort to build up a decent following. So you need to have good photos, good hashtags, and also follow some other feeds and give their photos some Likes and Comments to help get things going.
You can put a link to your website in your Instagram profile, so you would definitely want to do that too.

Curmudgeon is right. Many online forums have members who are "not young." I watched a video that a YouTuber posted about a trip to a train show - lots of old men. I used to go to the motorcycle show in NYC, and there were lots of old men there, too, although the younger crowd was well represented.

Come to think of it, every group I've belonged to has consisted of "mature" members.

We could take a survey of the ages of our members. I'm 79.

Yes, train shows and bike stuff will attract oldies and not the younger generation very much at all. True!

However, that is not to say the young ones cannot be attracted here. Ugly Hedgehog is not limited to only a couple of genres that only attracts the interest of 'old men'. I know lots of young people who love photography. Most of them have a mirrorless now, but some are still using a DSLR. And some of them even like fiddling with old manual lenses mounted on their modern body. So they are out there. You just go to grab their attention in the right way to get some of them to come this way.
