So...did you explain to her that there is an alternative to BBF? Did you offer to restore the camera to the factory standard mode of operation? My wife would throw a BBF camera into the trash. No telling what my niece would do with it before she threw it into the trash. Neither of them photographs anything which makes BBF required or beneficial.

Yeah, I told her to try back button focus and explained the advantages. I told her that I would change it back to shutter release if she didn’t like BBF.

Factory reset would be the first thing I would do besides give someone a link to the manual PDF along with a used camera. 80% won't read the manual, but then, 80% won't use the camera, anyway.

UHH's smartphone section:

There are more than 40 specialty sections on UHH, well hidden from casual browsing

Yea, my wife wouldn't touch the camera in/with BBF, she would just want to press one button.
Luckily, with my Canon, placing it in AUTO reverts the BBF back to the shutter button.
No need to try to explain to someone how to use BBF, or center spot metering.
Then, back to "normal" (BBF/center spot) for me.

My grandkids(ages:19, 21 and 23) capture excellent images with their cell phones. However, they have little interest in printing images. They save and frequently post or share their images with others. No need or interest in cameras.

Interestingly, they loved using my DSLR’s when they were younger. As soon as they owned cell phones, their interest in cameras disappeared.

Would they be interested in joining UHH?
No way!!

Phone cameras will always be inferior to those big cameras. Photographers who are serious about their art will use a camera not a phone it produces a superior image. Phone cameras are excellent snapshot cameras but will always fall short of high quality

Throughout the history of photography, the path has always led to the simplification of the photographic process whether it was George Eastman and his first Kodak camera producing round images (during the time of glass plates) to "Brownies," Polaroids, Dianas, Lomography, Fuji mini-labs, Canon copiers and now cell phone cameras. The one underlying fact is that all these cameras were good enough. Cell phone images exist to be shared with other phones and social media, so the images are good enough! A different process than us serious photographers! :-) LOL

Be well!! Ed

He spends time with the ukulele set...

Yeah, young musicians learn the ropes from older ones. Old professionals LOVE to mentor young wannabes. The smart young musicians take full advantage of that. They're the ones with the unstoppable work ethics.

A couple of years ago, a young violinist, Erin Schreiber, played violin solos in Chris Botti's band at the Coltrane Jazz and Blues festival. She was a child prodigy who played in orchestras, almost from the time she could hold the instrument. Associate Concertmaster is her title now, with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra. She's been there since she was 20, in 2008. The crowd went wild when they all launched into Led Zeppelin's Kashmir, as they did in these two performances:

There are quite a few people posting photos to UHH that were shot with smart phones (there's even a smart phone section), just as there are people posting highly edited images, abstracts, focus-stacked macros, and other non-documentary styles.

You have three major, unrelated divisions of UHH. The niche areas have value as inspiration and education, even if to just a few, Gallery is a popular social sharing site, and the purpose of main "discussion" appears to be something other than learning/teaching photography: some days nostalgia, some days whining, and every day a playground for trolls and big egos

Those who spend most of their time in main "discussion" are unlikely to experience an epiphany when asked, "What's wrong with us?"

Much like the couple motorcycle clubs I belong to, or once belonged to. Hard to attract new younger members with the fresh outlook. But as far as photography, they are into selfies and the like to share with their peers, why share with grandma and grandpa who they don't know?

I read through this whole thread out of interest as I'm seeing similar issues with other special interest groups.

Some of the problems and issues on here include that we are, with few exceptions and of course everyone will think they are an exception, a group that is not conducive to attracting younger members because we are:

- Equipment obsessed, with most of us having thousands on dollars worth of equipment that we can barely use (judged on so many posted results). With all the financial pressures these days, where is the incentive to spend THAT much money on something that doesn't do that much?

- Highly critical of anything that doesn't match with personal, frequently outdated, beliefs

- Obsessed with the past. Like it or not cellphones ARE the future, which should be obvious to anyone with half a brain. Dedicated cameras are not. Period. Get used to it. This alone kills many people's interest in this dying group of dinosaurs. If someone likes taking pictures with their phone, how about trying to nurture that into a serious interest in photography, instead of the usual super-critical world of sh#t that is dumped on them for having the temerity to use a phone to make an image?

There may be many things "wrong" with younger people, but have a good, really good, look in the mirror.

I'm a mere baby at 69, but less and less do I find UHH relevant to me, which is disappointing.

I agree.
The Cell Phone thread should be at the top for a while.
Maybe, if we get a group of younger cell phone users to join, us older folks should only be allowed to ask relevant
questions. WE just might learn something

Makes one wonder when will the tools we use no longer be available.
I think the answer to can we get new members is likely NO!

But is UHH about the tools? Or is it about photography?

They didn't lose interest in photography, they lost interest in a certain set of tools.
