i just bought a Q3, and I think I have most of the menu options figured out. But I don't understand the optical zoom (28, 35, 50, 75, 90) feature. I am shooting JPG, and if I select 50mm, for example, it will show a 50mm outline in the EVF. But will it actually shot at that framing, or will it still shoot at 28 and the 50mm outline is just for illustrative purposes only?
Second, the camera came with a very thin ring, which matches the threading on the lens. What is this ring for?
Thanks in advance.

The thin ring is to protect the threads that the lens hood screws on to for when the lens hood is not used.
The optical zoom is not an actual zoom. The camera will shoot at 28mm but the some of the pixels on the sensor will be turned off to reduce the active sensor size to produce the equivalent angle of view of the selected focus length.

The owners manual has a chart that shows the number of active pixels in use for each equivalent focal length.
Enjoy your new camera.
So the "optical" zoom is not realy optical ? If the unwanted pixels are literally "shut off" then they wont be in the raw file ? Somehow Im not seeing the utility of this "zoom".
Can it manufacture "fill in" pixels like a Sony ?

If you shoot in JPG, the camera gives you 50mm but it doesn’t keep the 28mm. However, if you shoot in DNG, the camera keeps the 28mm and displays the 50mm, you can always cancel the 50mm crop to go back to 28mm if you like.
I have a Leica D-LUX (109). The "thin ring" is cosmetic and can be unscrewed to give access to threads for lens hood or an "automatic" lens cap, which opens as the 24-75 extends when the camera is turned on.
