I was 16-years old and a Junior in high school. I was in physics class when they announced that President Kennedy had been shot. Keep in mind that we were in Northern Michigan and it was in the middle of deer season, so the first comments that we made between ourselves was that we didn't know Kennedy was a hunter, since for us, the only time we ever heard of someone getting shot was because of a hunting accident (there's no question that we were living sheltered lives). It was maybe 30-minutes later, when I was in study hall, that it was announced that Kennedy was dead and that it had taken place in Dallas.

About 15-minutes after that, they announced that classes had been cancelled and that the buses would soon be taking us home. We were also informed that since it was Friday, and that Thanksgiving was the following Thursday, that school would be closed for the entire week, instead of the just the originally planned two-days, Thursday and Friday.

I was working in a local grocery store/meat market at the time and being in an area where a lot of hunters came for deer season, we were pretty busy, so my boss asked me to come in and work most of the days that I had off (I was already scheduled to work the weekends and after school so in the end, it was only a few extra hours). We had a TV at the store and we watched most of the news programs covering the activities of the week. Of course, everyone who came into the store had to stop, look at what was going on and express their opinions and views, to say nothing about speculating what actually happened and who was ultimately responsible. While the term 'conspiracy theory' was not yet part of our lexicon, you could see how stuff like that got started and what perpetuated it.

I was a teenager in England getting ready to go to evening kids' meeting at a local gospel hall. TV news came on reporting that JFK had been killed. I walked down the road to the gospel hall and reported to the senior church folks what had happened. One of them said "Well, he was a Catholic!" That was the last time I attended the gospel hall. And the beginnings of my disbelief in God.

How I remember "Valley College...," And Doggy Dog. But what I miss Most is a Cupids Chili Dog...

I disagree... Khruschev was the one that averted war, by backing down... Kennedy was the one that was pushing for war.

It really depends on what one read or heard.

The Soviet Union was faltering at that time, just like at the start of WWII. They were bleeding hard cash. But this is another thread, right along the many that crossed each other's paths.

I was off stage at Rowan University, (then Glassboro State College) preparing to play with our HS orchestra. Someone came backstage to tell us. Some cried, but we had to put on the concert. I was a freshman. I saw Ruby shoot Lee Harvey Oswald, live on tv, too.

Elementary Catholic school, so before we went home, had to go into church to touch the holy water & pray (?). Then we were sent home. Dad was Catholic, so was JFK.

I was at Lackland AFB in Texas., in the short timers brigade escorting other short timers as we were getting discharged (some honorable some not so honorable). Walking around the base. The sky lit up with just about every aircraft on the base up in the air. Some of the guys (rednecks)said they were glad it happened! They kept all of us in an extra two weeks. We were discharged after the funeral.

For those mentioning military postings, I Salute You.

Our country began its slow fade that day

Checking out of NAS Cecil field Jax Fl, TDY Sandia base Albuquerque NM for more schooling. Flew thru Dallas Tx day after. Never saw so many feds in one location in my life! The month of mourning @ military facilities told the story ! Sad time. We are failing , again to learn the under lying lesson.

I was setting in the basement of my parents house listening to WDGY 1130 am r&r music when about 1:30pm a news bulletin came across the radio telling everyone about Kennedy being shot. I ran upstairs and told mother about what had just happened. I was home from school with a bad ear ache and a bad
Sinus infection. I still remember my friends mother and the oldest brother came over to watch the funeral on Monday. Funeral was held in the afternoon. Mother saved the Mpls Star and Tribune newspapers about the Kennedy association. I still have the 3 newspapers which are light orange in color. I will never forget those days in November. I don't remember if he died before or after the Thanksgiving holiday.

In eighth grade typing class. Someone from the 'front office' came to tell us he'd been shot. I think it was a PA announcement later telling he had passed. We all will never forget just where we were at that time. At that age it took a little time to feel the sense of loss.
Funny, too that we all know where we were when the astronauts landed on the moon. I had to leave home before the event actually occurred...I was on a train from home in NJ back to the US Naval Academy, so I didn't see it live.
Juxtaposition of two historic days.
