A long time ago (I am almost 75!), I bought one from Orion telescopes to go with my 12x binoculars. So you can check out telescope companies and Edmunds Scientific. --Richard

An L-bracket for binoculars is a completely different thing.

OK, that might be my mistake. What is the L-bracket we are talking about here? --Richard

It’s a bracket that’s normally left attached to the camera. There is a plate on the bottom and a plate that goes up the left side of the camera, both Arca-Swiss style to allow quick attachment to a tripod and so it can be quickly and easily switched between landscape and portrait orientation. You can buy universal models that are adjustable to fit most cameras or designs that are made to fit a particular camera. The big advantage to camera specific L-brackets is that they’re designed to fit the contours of the body and also to allow access to the battery and all external ports without removing the bracket.

I am looking for an L bracket for my old Sony A99II would any of you have an old one around you would be willing to sell? I am not finding anything at B&H, amazon, or ebay. I bought a new camera and L bracket, but like to keep the old one as my back up, but don't want to have to be switching heads

Where I could get a custom-designed L bracket for my bodies, I have RRS 'single piece' models. Otherwise, I have Kirk. I have a Kirk 'universal model' for my Sony a7II. It blocks access to the plug-in slot for the wired-remote control, but I don't use that tool very often, so I rarely remember that difficulty. The Kirk is a 2-piece bracket. I just loosen and reposition the bracket to install the wired-remote, when needed.

I’d also check out the Ellie from Three Legged Thing. The bottom plate is long enough on my OM-1 but leaves enough space to access the battery door. The side plate can be slid out to access the side ports, but that’s a rare occasion. The only real issue is it sometimes interferes with the articulating screen but I can always work around it. RRS makes a dedicated L-bracket but it’s $100 more and I hate the design.

I think the Ellie is about $70, although this got me looking and I saw that they’re now making a dedicated L-bracket for my OM-1, so my Ollie is arriving tomorrow and might have an Ellie to sell. Another inexpensive option is one that’s made for some of the Sony a7 models, the Smallrig 3984. You can remove the part that extends under the grip and use it without that part. Rather than have a fulltime plate on the left, the plate is hinged and sits under the camera in landscape mode and locks up against the left side when you flip to portrait. I know it’ll fit the OM-1. It might be worth looking into.
