I wouldn’t worry about it. You’ll never see it in a Pentax.

Fill flash outside would be a breeze at any speed. Video would no longer worry about flicker, a big deal. High speed in RAW well over 60 FPS would be a blessing for wildlife and sports photographers.
I still believe Sony missed on the price point, this camera will kill future A1 sales. Something Sony has done over the years releasing too many camera's.
Watch for used A1's before it's scheduled firmware update. You should be able to get some nice prices.

Yeah, I’m mostly using film cameras these days. My use of film already tells you of some features {such as burst} not to bother taking about.

First, uninformed, reaction:
How many watts/second does the electronics consume?
Battery size and life? - Batteries/second?

How and why?

Has marketing told engineering and manufacturing about this?

Definitely a horse race finish line camera.

"Gut Punch" - Now there's a unique reason to buy a $6000 camera ??

But for those who have the skill to benefit from the technology it very well might!

Dan Carr put it thusly: "[T]his camera represents a seismic shift in camera technology." For Jared it's a "gut punch" to the competition. But competition is what makes all the brands improve.

No smartphone has a global shutter, no smartphone can shoot flash at ANY shutter speed even up to 1/80,000 sec. , no smartphone can shoot at 1/80,000 sec., no smartphone shoots 120 fps raw, no smartphone has a four-way articulating screen, no smartphone has a fullframe sensor, and loads more A9III features that no smartphone has, just a fact.

Cheers

The Kodak Instamatic never was competition for a 35mm rangefinder camera, let alone a 35mm SLR. So?

And the position. Good for profession photographers as advertised; not for someone sitting halfway up the stands.

For people who use flash, especially fill flash, this is a very big deal.
There will be a learning curve that goes all the way back to flash bulbs where shutter speed could be faster than flash duration, but now we have TTL flash metering for at least speed lights as well as some other bigger units.
There are lots of cameras that can shoot 15-20 FPS which in the real world is more than enough for capturing just about any kind of action, so I look at 120 FPS as sort of a "Because we Can' type of statistic unless you want to make RAW Slo-Mo movies.......
It is clearly a real advance Sony should upgrade their speed lights to be bullet proof at those firing rates.
People pay thousands extra for Leaf shutter MF lenses just for flash synch.
Sony did it first, good for them, it probably won't be long before others join the club.

I can understand why they elected to do this in the A9 camera line. It's a lower volume, niche line and for intro'ing something as big as this, it allows them to see how it works out and is accepted by a much lower volume of cameras.

Of course, Sony tells us very little about their roadmap and no telling the plans for other cameras. We don't know if 24M pixels is near the limit on what they can fit on a sensor that size, or if they are not yet limited on how dense it can go. We just don't know. And that is the way Sony prefers it.

This global sensor will be more expensive to make than existing sensors. But they have broken the ice, and the door is open for more, if they feel it will make sense.

Certainly I would love to have a global sensor, but as a retired hobbyist, I don't see that happening.

I will be interesting to see how this new camera works out.

Well, Kudos to Sony. Quite an impressive feat.

I'll wait till the tech is available on my OM systems cameras.

But I will admit to a touch of envy, though I've never had an issue with rolling shutter, and don't really use flash. I can see, though, where the global shutter would make flash a lot easier.

Good luck to all of you who become the beta testers for this coool piece of gear.

BillNkon, many pros have already said online they would have paid much more than $6K USD for this to get those revolutionary performance features. Every time we say Sony has priced something too high, it goes on to huge sales. LOL

Sony knows what its targeted market will bear to have these firsts. Sony doesn't release too many cameras, folks are always asking Sony for more options. That is why Sony remains world #1 in mirrorless camera sales, over Canon.

A1 owners aren't selling their cameras yet, we are waiting for the A1, version 2, which likely will have even a higher megapixel global shutter.

Cheers and best to you.
