I am a retired truck driver and drove through Gallup many times back in the 70's and 80's before interstate 40 was finished, all traffic went right through town. Now I suppose it is considered a city.

Yes, I-40 bypassed the town in 1980. I drove through downtown in Aug '76 on the way back from Canada and got caught in the annual Ceremonial parade.

I love Gallup! thanks for the pic,, my favorite place in town is the El Rancho hotel, stayed there many times, Ronald Reagan room is supercool blast from the past!

It's not like just about any other town. Love El Rancho, too. I actually photographed a wedding there for a friend a few years ago and probably spent a few hours in the 49er bar in the early 1980s. They've recently done a lot of repair and renovation.
