The Sony released specs.

Sony A9III. 24.6mp fullframe stacked Global shutter, no rolling shutter in stills or video;120fps with no blackout with full AE/AF-C; 1/80,000 sec. shutter speed; Flash sync at ANY speed; AI subject recognition, tracking and AF; 8-stop IBIS; 4-way articulating LCD screen, and more. Sony 300mm f2.8 GM lens also announced, available in Feb. 2024. Firmware updates for Sony A1 and A7SIII coming March 2024.

But at $6000.00, I feel I might go to the Nikon z8 with also has pre capture, which is what I really wanted.
I can live with 30 fps too, I do not need 100+ fps RAW, which is nice.
Again, my biggest grip is the high price for this camera. The Z9 is priced less.
I believe Sony is asking too much for where this camera sits in their line up.
My personal opinion.
And I will be interested in what the firmware update will be for the A1, if it includes pre-capture, that would be a real deal.

I watched the two promo videos that are on the "Hunts" photo site. Very impressive camera. But way out of my price range. Lots of very nice things but I probably wouldn't use like the 120 fps. But if Santa put one (pre order card) under my Christmas Tree. I would gladly sell my a9 and maybe a1.

The Flash Synch at any speed , and no rolling shutter is a great accomplishment.
The processing speed required to do that also gives 120FPS with full AF
It's a big deal.
All the camera companies will get there, but this is a big first for Sony
Canon's R 1 will supposedly have it, .....but it is not here yet
I'm sure Nikon is hard at work too.
But Sony is first on this one.
Competition is good

Yes, precapture would be great to have on a1 and IMO, at least to my eye, rolling shutter has not been a significant issue. I noticed with once with my a73 when I had the camera set to mechanical shutter, but once I switched it to electronic shutter the issue went away. And I have never complained re distorted images with my a1, at least not noticeable to me. I do mainly bird photography, and I think having a larger sensor, like the a1, is more important for cropping for composition, including birds in flight. So, I am not coming down with a case of GAS.

OK. You got me. What is a "global" shutter?
I'm envisioning a huge thing in space that one can swing shut for global warming.

Thanks for asking. I was scratching my head & wondering if I should ask & put myself in the crosshairs of the oft-snarky UHH members. You're braver than I.

All Major majors have been working on this, and perhaps both the upcoming Canon R1 and Sony A1 version 2 will also have global shutters , and Nikon and Panasonic may have a fullframe one soon also. But Sony has another first in a consumer fullframe mirrorless camera.

Cheers and best to you all, whatever your brand you prefer.

What, no more distorted airplane propellers, or other moving vehicles. I don't get that now. My Fujifilm T100T has both an electronic and mechanical shutter, mirrorless too! My other cameras are all Pentax DSLRs with focal plane shutters. The Live View mode in some of my cameras is an electronic shutter, but it is probably not great for motion or action photos either. But thus far I have never used LV for action shots, only static subjects with a tripod.

I think you will see new a few top cameras soon as the Olympics are coming up. I have heard rumors that the Canon R1 has been seen in the wild which sounds about the right timing for a Olympics release

Sony isn't asking too much. Sony has been working on this tech for many years and that all costs millions for sure. Some Sony pros today said they would have paid even more to have all the revolutionary competitive advantages of this new global shutter.

For a hobbyist yes it may be too costly. But working pros making money with it can justify the costs. And think of how much media outlets will spend to cover the Paris Olympics in 2024. The cost of these cameras will be a drop in the bucket compared to their other costs.

Use what works for you, and your budget and be happy.

Cheers

I predict this is just the beginning of the end for still cameras. With the Olympus' Pro Capture mode, now being copied by Pany and Nikon, the no mechanical shutters, global shutters, ever increasing write speeds and increasingly cheap data storage, eventually people will simply take a short video and be able to pull out the perfect moment, maybe 50 meg capture, with no real figurin' by the photographer. Noise will be gone, performance in near darkness will be excellent. Watch the short video, click a button for the exact right moment, and its a done deal.

But then we will need an Ai APP to make the decision as to whether frame 329,678 is sharper and more pleasing than frame 326,301, or was it frame 302,153?
