I want to upgrade one of my two cameras (Nikon D3100). Instead of considering another DSLR, I'm considering a mirrorless. Had one question. Since I have two lenses that go with my DSLR Nikon that I want to keep, but need an adaptor to use them on a mirrorless, does that adaptor negate the advantage you get with mirrorless by increasing the distance between the lenses and sensor (?).

The adapter increases the distance because your lenses require it. There is some advantage especially for wide angle lenses to be close to the sensor. However, your lenses were already designed to be relatively far away from the sensor so the adapter doesn't make it worse.

The adaptor not only allows the F-Mount lens to attach to the Z-Mount camera, it also increases the distance from the lens flange to the mirrorless camera sensor to match the distance from the lens flange to the DSLR sensor so the lens focuses properly.
Nikon has 3 Z-Mount DX cameras: Z fc, Z 30 and Z 50 that you can use your F-Mount lenses on.

Im using a 600mm with an adapter on my z9 and no problems at all. Ive used sigma lenses and Nikon lenses and had no problems.
The new Z lens are faster but im old and slow so im ok with it for now.
That advantage is with designing new lenses. Your old lenses will work just as well or better.

I use adapted DSLR lenses on a mirrorless camera.
They work at least as well and for me they work better than they do on a DSLR.

Thanks do much everybody for commenting. I really appreciate it. I just went to the store and got the mirrorless Z50 and an adaptor. Can't wait to try it.

When I got my Z50 I tried it with the adapter and a Nikkor 800mm F/5.6. It looked funny, but worked well.
These were with a Nikon Z50 and Nikkor Z kit lens. It's a fun camera that provides nice results.

These were with a kit lens. Since then I bought a few more "Z" lenses. It's a fun camera that provides nice results.

These are the quality of pictures I hope to take with my new Z50.

I'm sure you'll find that it can easily produce a superior quality than the examples posted.

NO. The adapter for Nikon changes nothing on a FF lens. I believe it is the same for a APS-C lens. So, if you have a lot of these lenses many feel that these DSLR lenses actually produce sharper images on a Nikon Z than they did on your Nikon DSLR. And, the adapter lets you get into mirrorless cheaper because you already have some lenses.
To quote Nikon, "The new Nikon Z mount takes all old Nikon lenses using the FTZ ("F to Z") adaptor. It works perfectly with AF-S, AF-I and AF-P lenses. But with AF-D and AF lenses you lose autofocus, plus (like with Nikon manual focus lenses such as AI, AI-S and AI-D and AE lenses), you have to open and close the aperture manually."
