That's a lot Terry. At 75 I could throw a 100 pound bag of horse feed up on my shoulder and take it 50 feet from the truck to the feed room. At 81, I could take the 50 pound bags...now a 25 pound bag would be OK. Give me another year and hand me 5 pounds of anything and it will probably be enough! You are getting close to finding out...don't be too surprised.

There is a gray area, of course. Consider the ...ize versus ...ise endings. An example is "authorize" versus "authorise." The ...ize ending is still standard English in both countries, even according to the Oxford dictionary, but people in Britain started using ...ise endings in the last half of the 20th century.

Then there is doughnut versus donut. Both are acceptable in the US. Donut is rarely used outside of the US. It was popularized by Dunkin'Donuts here. Consider catalog versus catalogue and other words with similar endings. Both used in the US. Catalog is rare outside of the US.

Is it a gray area or a grey area? Who would have thought this topic would get to 5 pages and counting. Or is it who would of thought?

I had to edit this post twice for unintentional typos.

If you're bringing it up, you must have looked it up, or perhaps not. Gray and grey are two spelling of the same word. Both are acceptable everywhere, but gray is more commonly used in the US and grey everywhere else. But if a word happens to be a name, you can't change the spelling. Earl Grey, for example.

I know I shouldn't have, but I'm trying to push this to page 6. More comments means more advertising money for UHH. That keeps it going.

The spelling of the word "should've" tells you that it should be "should have", not "should of".

Since this has drifted off to be something of a pet peeve thread, another is when someone says: "I handed my camera to a friend and asked him to take a picture of my wife and I."

I think it was 1st grade when I was taught to take "my wife" out of the sentence and then say "...take picture of I." Does that make sense? Of course not. "Take a picture of me," or "take a picture of my wife and me." When I corrected a daughter once for saying that, she said "It's just polite."

Again, I was taught that politeness requires that you put the other before yourself in the sentence, but does not require the use of incorrect pronouns.

I was just kidding about "have" and "of". One of my pet peeves. Same with gray and grey. I guess my jokes fell flat but no big deal. It's all in fun. It's is another tricky one, you use the apostrophe when it's not possessive: "Its" is the possessive form. "It's" would be the contraction for "it is".

I saw somewhere, it might have been posted on UHH or Vince the Sign Guy, something similar to the following.

That is a mistake I see used so often. I too, was taught to remove the other person from the sentence and see what you get.

I figured that. Gray//Grey doesn't bother me but those other two make me clamp my hand over my mouth. Then I have to fight myself to keep from removing it.

In school, I made A+s in English/language/grammar won all the spelling bees. That was then, this is now. I make a lot of mistakes and have come to the conclusion that if I can read someone else's mistakes and still know what they mean, they can do the same with mine .

I am not sure if I can do it now that I am 69. But in my mid 50s I could read up-side-down!
