We all recall the days when you could haggle on price with virtually any car dealer. The pandemic and supply chain problems changed all that. We are a Subaru-loving family. From what we understand, Subaru corporate has instructed dealerships to sell cars for MSRP, with no markup over that. That was the case when, last year, we purchased a new 2022 Subaru Forester.
Time to forget doing any business with them! The new model price is well-padded to make up for the already poor price you would get on your trade-in. There is just no equity on trade-in versus selling price on used cars nowadays.

I remember the good old days when dealers gave you healthy discounts off the list price of new cars. Then manufacturers cut back on dealer discounts, but you could still get something off the sticker price.
The next step was to pay the sticker price, with possible dealer add-ons - like $400 wax and $200 wheel locks. Unfortunately, things have gotten worse because of supply and demand. For many popular models, dealers are adding 22% - 37% to the base price of the car. That's gotta hurt. "Well, if you don't want it, someone else will."

It is not just with cars. When the new Leica M-11 was released nearly 2 years ago, it seems no store had them in stock at list price for months. People who found any at all were being asked to pay considerably more than the already high list price. And a number of people did that.
I still think all the bluster about electric vehicles is a bunch of BS. I'm waiting to see what happens when everyone comes home from work at 5pm and plugs in their battery chargers. Will the electric grid go dim? Also, what will happen when the batteries start to die. I have heard replacement costs around 10K$ and where will all the dead batteries go? There are attempts at recycling but will they be able to handle the quantities? Also we had an electric car catch fire in the area and it took the fire dept 6 hours to put it out. Reminds of the old days of the true magnesium rims - they were fun to extinguish. I think it's all attempts at politicians (like California's governor) trying to make it look like they are doing something. We'll see. I'll stick to my 94 Ram/12V Cummins.

What does any of that have to do with photography? What happened to this website recently?
This discussion has little to do with Photography but that's why it is in the general chit-chat, non-photography section. What has happened to the site is that someone divided it up into numerous sections, and this is one of the sections. Just FYI, I don't like the new system and have lost interest in most of it.
We don't have the generating capacity to charge the batteries on millions of cars and trucks. The wind turbines and solar power cannot make up for the loss since fossil fuel power plants that are being removed from service. The Green people just don't understand reality.

It is going to get worse because automobile manufacturers are beginning to adopt the add-on and accessories as a service model like that has taken over the software market. Soon if you want that "Entertainment Console" it will cost you $10 per month to use it. Ahhh, the good old days.

LOL wait till the new prices, from the cost of ending the UAW strike, hit. Then a few of us will be priced out of new cars.
Can't wait to see when the auto workers start getting laid off, because people can't afford to buy the cars they are making anymore. I'm a Union worker myself, but what they were asking for was a bit greedy. Like you said about the cost of the settlement. The companys aren't going to cut their profits to pay for it, the consumers are gonna pay for it.

We probably will never buy another car or need another after our 2020.
The auto workers, in my non-union opinion, were a mite greedy (they are already paid fairly well) but the UPS settlement, again in my opinion, is ridiculous and I drove a big rig for FedEx for a year. This fuels the never-ending cycle. Unions get more money, companies raise prices to make up for it, people can't afford to pay the new prices, prices go up, workers are in the same position in a few years and ask for more money. Oh well, I am glad to be retired and paid fairly well with Soc Security and VA Disability.
I will tell you guys a little story of why Mercedes Benz car don't have a sticker price on the window.a rookie salesman at a Mercedes dealership sees a gorgeous young lady with her head stuck in one of the cars looking and smelling the new car.she is wearing a mini skirt and a thong.( there is nothing to the imagination) the salesman is about 3 feet from her admiring what he is watching and waves at all the other salemen standing at the picture window wishing they were in his spot.the young woman passes gas and boy she was a stinker.she pulls her head out of the car and noticed the salesman standing next to her so she tries to distract him.she says she wants to buy the car and wants the price right now.the salesman says," look lady, if just by looking at it you farted, if I give you the price you will shit over it.
