Are Photographers Horrible People?

"Mommy, what's that man holding?"
"He's holding a camera, Billy. Stay away from him!"
That's funny.
The question brought me back to my younger days when I worked as a photographer's assistant. Many times I'd be at an event or seminar or whatever gathering & would find myself being pushed around as we all tried to get a shot or get closed to a speaker. Not sure if it was because I'm a woman or because I was young but I definitely felt bullied by the other photographers. Happened often enough that I'm tempted to say, Yes, photographers are nasty people. Present company excluded, of course. Thankfully, I've grown more assertive over the years.

Lol! Good point.
"Also, the anonymity of social media lends itself for others to be rude."
Amen, brother. If you'd shine the light of day at them, they'd skitter away like rats.

That’s my point. I have waited for my turn for a clean shot. You’ve seen me waiting my turn. The view is clear and I am set to shoot, then you just step in front of my shot. You didn’t even ask if you could step up grab a quick shot, you just did it. That’s rude and you have no right to complain if I get a little pissie rude

When you comment to people on another forum that is about nonphotographic matters about photographers being rude, their response will reflect their experience of dealing with photographers out "in the world". On this forum, you will also get that, but additionally will receive responses complaining about the snarkiness that permeates the discussions on this channel. Other than some people crowding in and others who believe they are entitled because they are using a tripod, I haven't noticed much rudeness in the field. However on this forum, I am struck by the number of people who bravely fire off volley after volley of rude, snarky, smartass remarks from the safety of their anonymity.
Over 25 years of shooting more than 450 weddings I have had many butt holes block the shot and on vacation have had to wait for the dummys to clear out of my picture but, if you ask them to allow you to get a shot for yourself, most will be glade to move. As for the nasty and sometime uninformed comments made by some members on here, I would like to suggest you send them a P.M. and tell them to cool it. If they can't say something nice then just
SHUT the F__K UP !!! Or go down to the garden and eat some worms. LOL
I don't qualify as a "photographer" but do love taking pictures. My take on this is anytime you have a group of people involved with a hobby, there seems to emerge a vocal minority who appear invested in letting others know about their superior knowledge. I don't know why this is, but I've noticed that in groups devoted to raising animals, showing horses, etc. I think it's just the nature of humans. Those people probably have their own backstories which might explain why they feel that need or have a chip on their shoulder.
That being said, I think there are loads of people/photographers who love sharing their enthusiasm and knowledge with others. They are wonderful at taking newbies under their wing and offering helpful advice or solutions to problems. I think they are in the majority. There are a lot of generous folks on this forum that I've observed. <3

Sure you do!!!!
You take pictures, right?
Then you're a
photographer.
My dad's words "Be kind or be quiet" will always ring in my ears because he told me to never forget that. It's not always easy. I can take it when they are being snarky to me but for some reason, when they are snarky to someone else, I just want to say "Shut your ugly mouth!", but I figure we are all adults who know how to take care of ourselves, so I just move on....but, it does give us the opportunity to know who's ugly and who's nice among us.
The photographers that I've encountered (in public), are usually trying to stand alone and away from the crowds,
so they can "shoot" in private.
The only photographers that seem to be nasty or [rude], are wearing badges that say, "PRESS".
Those Press people, aren't there to get the best photos, but to get the "first story" for their deadlines.
Yet, there are always exceptions. Some photo journalists are very pleasant when dealing with public.
