We (you and I) are very fortunate. Three years ago yesterday I celebrated my 80th birthday. My partner had a party to help me celebrate. Of course everyone else was younger than me. No one actually asked but I recall sharing this thought: if you had asked me on my 70th birthday what life would be like at 80, I NEVER would have imagined what turns out to be my reality! Today, three years later, I couldn’t be happier! When frequently asked “how are you?” my usual response for the past 15 or more years has been “if I felt any better, I couldn’t stand myself!”

l love this. As I fast approach my 8th decade I often wonder where did the time go. I find myself as this was said trying to fit in a lot that I have missed in those 80 years. All my unused bucket list will never happen but I am at peace with that even though I still have hope of some getting filled. The worse thing for me as a photographer is that I am going blind and the photos I take are not what I like to see so that is heartbreaking for me.

I knew an old guy who said "Everything that doesn't hurt, doesn't work."

Getting old is a privilege not a right. Not everyone gets that privilege. Live each day.

You hit my nail right on the head! I was happy when I was young doing things I loved to do, painting, riding horses, cooking, raising flowers and living with and for my husband and children. Having cancer 33 years ago taught me what that is like, so I can encourage others. Now one child is gone, husband is gone and the only thing that I CAN do is what I want to do, when I want to and IF I want to.
I wouldn't trade all that wisdom to be young again either.
Thanks for sharing that.

Mrsmoses, PLEASE get some Vitamin A. Years ago I had cataract removal by a DR who did removals for Ronald Reagan and many of the stars. I quit wearing glasses then. He told me that to keep your eyes healthy to take vitamin A every day. That was probably 25 years ago. I will be 86 next Friday and I still don't need glasses. I thread a needle without glasses or a needle threader. My eyes haven't gotten any worse since he told me that. Please try that to keep them from getting any worse.

I love the T-shirt that my (baby sister) sent me.
It say, "I thought growing older would take longer."

😂 I'm only 75 yrs. (Grade school is still fresh in my mind.)

I've learned one thing about older folks...don't complain about your back hurting, or that you've pulled a muscle.

I was talking to my dad a few weeks ago...he's 92. Mentioned that my body is getting worn out.
Huh? You're still a young man...lol.

It only goes downhill evidently...

He's still out and about every day...still running his corporation...though he just skims everything now...has ppl in place he treats right...no worries. Meanwhile...he's out cruising around the world...I never know what country he is going to be in when I call.

I am on a vitamin called Preservision. I have macular degeneration which will never be stopped. I appreciate the advise though and will up my vitamin A. I haven't been able to ride either as I have esential tremor which also hinders my photo taking. But to tell the truth I miss the riding more than anything else so will have someone else get the privalege of training and showing them.

I'm so sorry to hear this. My husband had macular degeneration also and the same DR told him to take Vitamin A also.
I'm really sorry that you've had to stop riding. I hope to ride until I'm at least 90. Had a friend who showed horses until she was 98 and was still winning. Best wishes to you. Stay safe and be blessed.

At 88 I have to agree with everything he wrote. I have been blessed and I thank God that I have my health, a few of my marbles. That only thing I feel sorry about is that I'm the last man standing. I would be nice to have a few of my buddies to go on photo trip with. I leave tomorrow for a 5 day photo trip to Yosemite National Park. I hope to keep up with the group. I will tell them in case we are chased by a bear that I will have their backs. Hell I can't run any more.

Going the e-mail rounds.

The other day, a young person asked me: - What did it feel like to be old?
I was very surprised by the question, since I did not consider myself old. When he saw my reaction, he was immediately embarrassed, but I explained that it was an interesting question. And after reflection, I concluded that getting old is a gift.
Sometimes I am surprised at the person who lives in my mirror. But I don't worry about those things for long. I wouldn't trade everything I have for a few less gray hairs and a flat stomach. I don't scold myself for not making the bed, or for eating a few extra "little things." I am within my rights to be a little messy, to be extravagant, and to spend hours staring at my flowers.
I have seen some dear friends leave this world, before they had enjoyed the freedom that comes with growing old.
-Who cares if I choose to read or play on the computer until 4 in the morning and then sleep until who knows what time?
I will dance with me to the rhythm of the 50's and 60's. And if later I want to cry for some lost love...I will!
I'll walk down the beach in a swimsuit that stretches over my plump body and dive into the waves letting myself go, despite the pitying looks of the bikini-wearers. They'll get old too, if they're lucky...
It is true that through the years my heart has ached for the loss of a loved one, for the pain of a child, or for seeing a pet die. But it is suffering that gives us strength and makes us grow. An unbroken heart is sterile and will never know the happiness of being imperfect.
I am proud to have lived long enough for my hair to turn gray and to retain the smile of my youth, before the deep furrows appeared on my face.
Now, to answer the question honestly, I can say: -I like being old, because old age makes me wiser, freer!-.
I know I'm not going to live forever, but while I'm here, I'm going to live by my own laws, those of my heart.
I'm not going to regret what wasn't, nor worry about what will be.
The time that remains, I will simply love life as I did until today, the rest I leave to God.
