I have a problem with skunks in my yard at night. I live on a 1 acre property in the California foothills. About half of it is fenced so that my two dogs can't get out, but skunks can walk right through the fence to get in. I just watched one do just that. It went under my car to get out of the light I had just turned on. One of my dogs got it once, the other twice. I can't tell you how horrible that is, having to wash the dogs in hydrogen peroxide, baking soda and dish soap. It is impossible to get all of the smell off, and they smell for a couple of weeks afterward.

I have been putting down skunk repellant for the past two weeks, and every morning I find new holes in my yard where they're digging for whatever they eat. Has anyone else had to deal with this? I've done Google searches, and aside from skunk repellant, there are recommendations for putting down animal urine, ammonia, vinegar etc. Amazon sells motion sensor lights to put around your property to make them leave.

Skunks have a very sensitive sense of smell and certain scents will keep them away. As one member pointed out, orange peels work. Skunks HATE the smell of Peppermint oil and Orange oil. This is picture of what I use at my mothers house for fire ants. It works. 2 ounces per gallon. Since you have fairly sized yard this or Peppermint oil spray around the fence and perimeter should keep them away. They are in your yard looking for food.
I wrote you this because this is something you can do quickly and safely.
Skunks are beneficial critters when not digging in your yard or getting onto the trash.
Orange oil can be found at any Nursery, Lowes, Home Depot etc. It goes a long way too. I got mine at Calloways but it is found everywhere.
Peppermint oil I have not seen but I am sure it can be found.
Good luck.
Bruce.

Animal control will trap them and kill them. I'm not keen on that, but I'm getting desperate. If anyone has successfully gotten rid of these critters, tell me how it was done.

Get some screening (or something) and run it along the bottom of the fence.

Jerry, he has a 1 acre yard and only part of it is fenced. It takes a serious fence to keep them out and not practical for a 1 acre yard unless he has a money printer and too much trouble.
Once the skunks realize they do not like the smell and cannot find food, they will go elsewhere.

I suggest you coexist. Keep the dogs in if they are unable to learn a hard lesson. If you don't like animals, why are you living in the foothills? You are intruding on the territories of skunks, coyotes, bobcats etc. What does this question have to do with photography?

I've lived near the San Gabriel Mountains (of So. Cal.) all my life until 2020. So, not only does he [Therwol] get skunks, coyotes, and bobcats, he [Therwol] could get black bears, mountain lions, opossums, deer, and raccoon.

Winchester, Henry, Colt, Barrette, Browning and several others all make very effective skunk repellant.

Thanks for the oil suggestion. I'm still inclined to believe that relocation is the only permanent solution, but if I can't find anyone to do that, I'll consider it.

Any photos? Maybe call your local pest control…

From my experience if you remove the skunks it will not be long before others will move in and claim their territory.
It is just a short fix and not very good for the animals either.

Uh yea, just spend you whole day and night patrolling the property for the rest of your life. And after you eventually and finally die or move away, more critters will just keep coming back.
Well you guys who think that shooting them is the answer, you are either serious or just mouthing. So, ask to visit the OP and camp out and you guys patrol his property and shoot them.
Being realistic Bruce.

Serious as a heart attack, as the old saw goes. I just control my own problems, not someone else's. And I no longer have skunk problems. Must have worked.

Well bro, what worked for you is good for you and I agree with you but considering this OP, the shooting thing is is not going to work in the long run.

After reading the last few replies I must add that I do not think it is legal to kill or harm or even relocate wild animals in California unless they are a threat to your life. Inconveniences, you just have to live with. Virtually every living thing is protected but game species during hunting seasons if you have a permit. Skunks are not Jack Rabbits.

Try to eliminate all sources of food, they are coming in because they are hungry. You may also want to fence in an area for your dogs so they have a place to relieve themselves at night without worry..

It was illegal for me to trap them without a license in suburban Chicago.
