This is my final set of photos from our trip last month. I finished with a shot of one of the murals in the Cattadrale of Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence. It depicts the infamous and utterly fascinating 14th Century English mercenary, John Hawkwood. A holdover of the English army in the 100 Years War, he ended up as one of the most renowned mercenary leaders in Italy. The inscription: "Ioannes Acutus eques brittanicus dux aetatis suae cautissimus et rei militaris peritissimus habitus est" (John Hawkwood, British knight, most prudent leader of his age and most expert in the art of war).
Most Europeans could not pronounce Hawkwood, so he was most often called Acuto (Latin: Acutus), meaning "sharp," as in cunning or astute. (The English word "acute" come from the same Latin root.)
He died in Florence and was originally buried there, although a later request by Richard II of England that his body be disinterred and shipped to England was possibly honored, for there is another memorial there.
