I recently received notice that there are several updates for the R3. I had tried to do that one received prior but didn't know how. I decided to do it, and it actually worked pretty seamlessly. I haven't used the camera since, so I don't know if it got ruined. And I still have 6 updates to do to be totally up to date.

I'm going to be needing my GPS a lot in upcoming days, and I knew there was a map update available. I had done this several times, and although time-consuming, it was pretty simple. So I started in. It stalled at 41% transferred data, and it was taking forever. I left it to grind away overnight, and started in again the next morning when maybe my internet connection would be better. Again, it stopped at about 40%. After several attempts, I started a chat, finally getting to a real person. She was pretty good, and finally determined that the newest map was bigger than my old device could handle. I had two choices, download partial maps or use an SD card. I opted for the SD card, went and bought one, then followed the directions on how to use it. It didn't work. I can't go back to my previous map because it is now corrupted. It won't uninstall, as was suggested to me. So my device is now a piece of expensive worthless plastic! This is why I don't update my cameras! If the same thing were to happen to my camera, I'd be devastated!

When you said, "And I still have 6 updates to do to be totally up to date." I think that each succeeding Canon update contains all the prior updates. So, you'd only have to install the last to be caught up. Still, I only do updates when there is a compelling reason to do so. If the update merely makes it possible to use a lens or accessory I don't have, I don't install it.

Interesting. I wouldn't know what is in each update.

I can understand your reluctance to update software! Using Fuji right now, the updates have been foolproof, and that is saying something coming from me. However, the magic is just how much Fuji includes in firmware updates for both cameras and lenses. Some literally transforms the camera with so many new and improved options that one would be crazy not to do the updates. Cheers!

I don't know what is in each one. I wish I did.

Each update tells you what it contains.

Waze is a great app but be aware it eats your battery and it is easy to accidentally leave running.

If a device works ok to your liking why update it? My ipad does automatic updates and sometimes the updates make using it more troublesome. My flash has updates available but my camera shop says it’s not necessary if I am satisfied with the way it works. That was two years ago.

When there are new maps available, I think it's a good thing. I was having difficulty with my 1DX, and they told me it might be that it hadn't been updated. (It wasn't.)

I generally wait a bit before I install any updates and check online to see if others experienced issues with the update.

Haven't yet had an issue. Now if we're talking update to my Lincoln Aviator well... took them eight days to get my display screen back to proper function after an update that their network installed. Or so they say.... bah!
