I recently received notice that there are several updates for the R3. I had tried to do that one received prior but didn't know how. I decided to do it, and it actually worked pretty seamlessly. I haven't used the camera since, so I don't know if it got ruined. And I still have 6 updates to do to be totally up to date.

I'm going to be needing my GPS a lot in upcoming days, and I knew there was a map update available. I had done this several times, and although time-consuming, it was pretty simple. So I started in. It stalled at 41% transferred data, and it was taking forever. I left it to grind away overnight, and started in again the next morning when maybe my internet connection would be better. Again, it stopped at about 40%. After several attempts, I started a chat, finally getting to a real person. She was pretty good, and finally determined that the newest map was bigger than my old device could handle. I had two choices, download partial maps or use an SD card. I opted for the SD card, went and bought one, then followed the directions on how to use it. It didn't work. I can't go back to my previous map because it is now corrupted. It won't uninstall, as was suggested to me. So my device is now a piece of expensive worthless plastic! This is why I don't update my cameras! If the same thing were to happen to my camera, I'd be devastated!

I would imagine any update for a camera would work as the manufacturer knows the limitations of that model.
As to a GPS I find that an interesting problem as well. I just updated my 12 year old one with no issues fortunately. But I do remember getting extra storage at the beginning.
As to a phone for GPS, they are good in cities but totally worthless when no cell service is available. My wife suggested not bringing a GPS on a drive and that was tough as I didn't have a real map in the Jeep either. So it was dead reconing for a while.

Perhaps someone has already suggested this but I have yet to scroll thru all the answers. But I would STRONGLY suggest that you call Canon Customer Service. They are excellent. 800-658-2666.

With respect to camera updates installing the last update includes all previous updates. With respect to GPS why not just use Google Maps on you phone?

I do use my phone's GPS, but it doesn't talk to me like my GPS does, even though I unmute it. So I have to keep looking at it to not miss turns, etc. Annoying. I'm on blue tooth in my truck, but I've never gotten the maps to work on the truck. It wants to use its own GPS, and it's so outdated and also doesn't talk to me unless I keep pushing buttons. Not going to happen on strange, busy city freeways going 70 MPH!

Google Maps on my iPhone works and talks to me just fine.

Because phones are worthless when there is no signal.
Only good in cities or places with cell towers.
I know.

You can always use your phone as a GPS, Kathy. The WAVE navigation app is very good, and it's always automatically up to date. if your car is new enough, this can also work right through it, and you don't have to do a thing except tell it where you want to go.

I believe you mean "Waze" App. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.waze&hl=en_US&gl=US

Ah ha! I think you've hit on the problem! Most of my drives where I use a GPS are in places where there is no cell service. It was suggested to me that I "save" routes so they would be available. Which is fine, but I have to stare at the screen all the time to see what I'm supposed to do next and when. Makes for bad driving. I'm afraid my GPS is dead in the water, but when I get back, I'll do another chat with them to attempt to fix the issue. Thanks!

I've already stated the problem with the phone is that it doesn't talk to me, so I have to be looking at it instead of the road. That's a no-no.

I can understand your reluctance to update software! Using Fuji right now, the updates have been foolproof, and that is saying something coming from me. However, the magic is just how much Fuji includes in firmware updates for both cameras and lenses. Some literally transforms the camera with so many new and improved options that one would be crazy not to do the updates. Cheers!

Yeah, I've had updates that have down graded (imho) programs and devices... especially my Samsung phone.
Sorry to hear this happened to you AzPicLady
