Unfortunately, this group is part of an ever shrinking collection of talented photographers. The average user of a cell phone camera isn't looking for "art", they are just snapping pics to show what they are eating. Not even good food photos, but again quality isn't the priority.

We may be a dieing breed, but we aren't gone yet. Carry on brave photographers. We do still make beautiful images.

Some artist paint with fingers, some just throw & flick paint.
The point is that brush, mouse, pencil, phone, dslr, mirrorless, ad infinitum... are all just tools of expression to an artist. It is the technical user who is limited by the tools on his hands.

There really is no reason to have a camera vs phone debate or polarization. They each answer to a different question.

I asked the question this evening, "Why do phones have more advanced technology than cameras" and part of the answer, "One reason why phones may have more advanced technology than commercial cameras is that phones have a larger and more diverse user base than cameras. According to a report by Statista1, there were about 5.22 billion unique mobile phone users in the world as of January 2021, compared to about 1.43 billion digital camera users in 2022. This means that phone manufacturers have more potential customers and more incentive to invest in research and development of new features and technologies for their devices"

Phones keep getting better and many are cheaper, the flagship phones continue to be the most expensive. I'm not getting rid of my Canon 90D and lenses but I'm very hesitant to change when really our newest cameras all brands are living in old technology compared to phones. In 1980 cell phones were a huge brick, with no text, no camera and they were dumb as a brick but they were a mobile phone. I read that the first shared cell phone pic was in 1997. Maybe the dates and info are off but the cameras we know and love/hate are falling behind and it doesn't appear that the big companies care or have a plan to meet the challenge. What are your thoughts?

My response:
... Cell phone for, Facebook.
..... Real camera's for "Important Stuff"

I just recently purchased the Samsung Galaxy. Yes, 23 ultra for a long 10 week to Europe and I am amazed at the 50 mega camera....

... But, It can in no way compare to the 45 megapixel images I get from the Canon R5... Which I also carry on the same trip.

I strongly encourage finding some kids who do photography with their phones and see what they are able to do when they don't know or realize that they can't.

When we rode the train at Cass, WV, I took maybe 20 pictures on the trip. We waited a few minutes to leave, as a young couple sauntered from the parking lot. He must have taken nearly 20 ‘selfies’ - with the train in the background - as they walked. I wonder how many selfies he took on the trip up and down the mountain. This behavior doesn’t impress us.

Use whatever camera you want but remember, you can't order a pizza, take it's photo, send it to friends inviting them to join you, all from one device, that can be carried in your pocket.

Don’t confuse matters. Smart phones and cameras serve different purposes. The {specialist} camera is better at the one task of photographing - if that is important to the user.

I am surprised that nobody has mentioned the importance of high end lenses.

Wrong young people. Find the ones interested in trains and see what they do. Your couple was interested in each other and took exactly the pictures they wanted..

Joer, before long there will be a phone that will laser cook that pizza.
