This is a Corsair. For years, I thought the aircraft designation was a F4 and some other associated letters. Then I found out that the Corsair came in multiple designations. It is still a Corsair, designed by Vaught. The famous gull wings. Anyway, what led me on this educational journey was looking at the airshow listings a few years ago and seeing a FG-1D Corsair listed. So I hit the Web. Anyway, this is my second viewing of this particular Corsair aircraft. This year, new paint job.

The F4-U Corsair was built by Vought. The FG-1D was built by Goodyear. Same identical plane. Nice shots.

Supposedly the gull wings were to accommodate the large prop. 14’ I think.

I probably shouldn't, but I assume that the pilot retracted the tail hook before touch down??

My fav plane of all time. Used to draw them in science class in Jr. High - and built all the models I could find. First time I saw on IN PERSON was at a Boy Scout Jamboree in 1956. It was mothballed, canopy open, some gauges missing, but I got to hoist myself on the wing and peer in. MAGICAL MOMENT! Then, later, drooled watching Black Sheep Squadron on TV. WOW! There are some super YouTube videos of the Corsair as well. Example :: Korean Conflict - the only Corsair pilot to shoot down a Russian MIG Fighter! Enjoy! - Johnny - LongJnSilver - https://youtu.be/dj_twpdDzO4?si=Nz17B5p1QTnHqdiX

Beautiful photos of the Corsair.

Corsair is the name of the basic design.

Before 1962, the Navy had a convention for model numbers.

F = Fighter
A number indicating the design type
G or U, indicating manufacturer
A dash,
Then subsets or design changes to the main design.

F4U, a Corsair made by Vought
FG, a Corsair made by Goodyear as a licensed contractor.

Vought made it to F8U, before the 1962 change.

Grumman had a similar situation with the F4F Wildcat. When produced by GM, they were labeled FM.
