It was Miner's Picnic at the Empire Mine in Grass Valley, CA. The Blacksmiths and the Miners are my favorites. The last man in the series, worked in the mine during the summer before he got a football scholarship to Sanford. He is 90 years old and has fascinating stories of his life. He is the true gold.

Very nice set Jim. It's good to see a young face, blacksmithing is a lost art

Thanks Jack. The blacksmiths at the mine are very dedicated and it is nice to see young people wanting to learn.

GREAT pictures. Love 'em!!! Even though we had horses for almost 60 years (77 of them at one time) and knew quite a few farriers through that time, I only know 3 stories about blacksmiths.

Hubby's best friend was a blacksmith. He said "It takes a strong back and a weak mind to be one". (He did not have a weak mind!!!!)

He came to our barn to put the first set of shoes on a huge yearling. When he bent over to pick up a front foot, she jumped up, landed on his back and wrapped her front legs around his neck. He simply grabbed her legs, lifted her off of him and let her down. No big deal.

Minnie Pearl said that her brother visited a blacksmith shop once. Picked up a piping hot horse shoe and threw it down quickly. Blacksmith said "Hot isn't it?". Brother said "NO, it just doesn't take me long to look at a horse shoe."
