A guy I worked for years ago came in one morning bragging about this.
Someone - not me - straightened him out and it was really pitiful to see.

Hey Jack, they also want me. By the time they are through with you, they will have information about you they can sell and also the money you spent on the book if you decide to buy it. I can't imagine anyone being interested in it. I'd hate to have to make enough money selling it, going door to door, to stay alive.

Publishers Clearing House used a manipulation similar to this. I was working in a very small town when I received a mailing that indicated that I was one of two people in the whole state of Washington selected to be in a drawing for $1,000,000. The problem was that one of my co-workers also received the same notification so I guess it was down to either her or me to win the jackpot. Yeah, right! It would be statistically improbable to be one of two in the whole state of Washington but to be in the same small town. I think that I will go outside and feed my Unicorn.
