Great cameras. I also have the RX10M4. Great camera with a load of features along with the 28-600mm lens. Could not find a lens with these specs that the camera has for such a price as the RX10M4.

Looking to buy a new camera, can't decide between bridge or compact. Looking for a good zoom lens, not too complicated to use, not fussed about wifi or touchscreen just one that takes great shots. Budget is up to £800.
Already have a Canon 4000D DSLR and a Panasonic Lumix TZ70 that I have had for ages and loved the picture quality and zoom but is now starting to have problems so wanting one to upgrade from this that I don't have to faff about changing lenses but gives me all theup to date features of a great camera. Most of the time my DSLR is gathering dust as it's too bulky to carry everything around.

Mighty good bargains on used middle-of-the-pack older used cameras if you can decide want you want. I have a couple of Canon pocketable cameras with zoom lenses, but because of the higher image quality I usually take my Nikon D5500 half frame when I want a small/light camera. You should get one of the newer Rebels and one lens that will do the majority of what you want. I crossed long zoom off of my list 10 years ago.
However, going to Handle Cameras is a good step one; it always made up my mind.

You made me to pull out the Sony rx100 and check it for pop up viewfinder. As I knew already, it doesnt have one. It only has a pop up flash. I wonder for your conviction otherwise!!

I have a Sony RX100 M7.

I have it right here

It has a pop -up viewfinder and also a flash

I use it all the time.

Perhaps you have an older model

What type of camera lenses do you now, are they Canon, Nikon, Sony, Panasonic or Keica?

If you have any lenses what are the sizes 50mm, 28-75, 75-200 or 200-400mm lenses?

What size lenses are you looking for on a bridge camera? The bridge cameras from Sony or Panasonic have a fixed lens from 28-600mm and range in price $1000-$1600 US prices. These prices are for new bridge camera, with used cameras are under $1000 for Sony and cheaper for a Panasonic.

Hope this helps you to find a bridge camera in you price range.

Now for a camera base what are you looking for, are you looking for a base to match the lenses you have or are you going to purchase lenses later?

You can find a base for under $800 in you price range but when you add the accessories like a microphone, external flash and a camera case you are going to be spending as much or more than a bridge camera. Now all new camera base are mirrorless and will be in your price range without lenses. Have you thought of a APC-S Camera and lenses? These will be cheaper than a bridge or a mirrorless camera with the same Megapixels as a Mirrorless. Now you will have to decide on a,fixed lens camera that is half mirrorless, a mirrorless base or a APC-S camera.
Good luck

When I took my trip to Australia, I took my Panasonic Lumix FZ1000, which is lightweight and takes outstanding pictures, IMO. (I now have the FZ1000 II, but this picture was taken with my original FZ1000.) In case you don't know, there are excellent how-to videos on YouTube on the operation of the camera which is easy to begin with, but you can learn tips and tricks too such as how to take macros. I find I use this camera more than my Nikon D750 and my other cameras. This picture of the Freshie is straight out of the camera without any processing, taken from a slow moving boat. This was in the Katherine Gorge south of Darwin. It is a bit soft considering the movement of the boat, but I was pleased that it processed well into a sharper picture, cropped and sharpened. I find this camera to be my go-to camera.

I've had my Canon G5X Mk II for about 3 years and love it. I looked at the Sony, but the Canon felt better in my hands and felt more robust. Also, since my DSLRs are Canon, the colors and menus are very similar. It has the pop-up viewfinder and flash. When I bought it, the Sony was $1,200 and the Canon $900. If it had been the other way around, I still would have gotten the Canon. We spent a month in Europe last year on two cruises (one ocean and one river), and my DSLR (90D) rarely left the ship. We did a month-long road trip around Italy this year and when we were "out and about, I took the G5X with me. If something happened to my G5X, I would buy another one to replace it.

My only objection to most Canon compacts is the lack of viewfinder, even though I'm beginning to use rear displays more often.

That was a requirement when I bought my G5X and it has one. The articulating rear display is also handy, especially if you want to get shots from down low, or ceilings without leaning backwards (like in cathedrals) or for doing selfies.

And if these are not in your budget, the Panasonic comparable models, Lumix DC-ZS200D and Lumix DMC-FZ2500 may be for you. Both have 1" sensors and non-interchangeable, wide range zoom lenses.

I would back this suggestion also.

Thank you all for your advice, more research to do on these models now and a trip to the shop to try some of them out. Not one for buying blind off the internet before handling them to see how they feel and operate. Never bought a refurbished camera how do you feel about buying second hand?

I think it's grossly unfair to physically touch, view or try out anything at a real store-retailer,
then go off and purchase the said item off the internet from the likes of Amazon.
If we all did that then soon there will be no camera shops, electrical shops, book shops etc.

One thing I can say about in store vs internet, the in store does not match or beat the internet store prices. I found out that major camera retails on the internet have compatible price. The only thing is you pay shipping costs but it you purchase over a dollar amount free shipping. You win both ways. I have purchased alot of items from B&H and never had a bad experience with them. They have an excellent sales force along with a return policy that if you do not like the item return it to them and they will issue you a credit towards new merchandise. I do not think a in store company will do it.

Yes, the G5 is one of the few, but in my case I wanted more of a "reach" at the long end.
