Yes, I remember that.

Etymology
From the suggestion, heavily advertised in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, that stoves using natural gas as a fuel cook more effectively than, for instance, wood-burning or electric stoves.

I'd like to copy files from the D drive on one computer to the D drive on a different computer by using my network, both are in my house. I followed (at least) three sets of directions online, but nothing works. Is it really possible to let one computer connect with another through a network?

It would be easy enough to remove the "donating" D drive and put it into the other computer, but networks are supposed to work, right? It's a "net" that "works."

Any suggestions gladly accepted. - Windows 10 on both machines.

I gave up after trying several times. I can connect between several PCs that have Win10/11 “Home” but the one that has “Pro” has resisted being copied “from”.

I do get it done using our NAS, which all PCs and I-devices connect to (with a password)… copy to the NAS then from the NAS.

I just copied a PDF from our desktop (Win 11 PRO) to my laptop (Win 11 HOME), no problem copying from the PRO box.
Check your privileges on the Win 11 PRO box.

STILL can't get to my wife's laptop files from the desktop or my laptop.
I wonder if it's because her laptop is a DELL........ Something they did differently.
The other two are HPs. They talk to each other.
At least she can push files to the desktop for Carbonite and me to backup.

This used to be a trivial process, but MS removed HomeGroup sharing somewhere between Win 10 & 11. Generally, the easy way was to map a drive on the remote machine to a local drive letter, but that doesn’t seem to work for me on 11 - you have to modify the sharing and permission settings. Here’s the UTube link: https://youtu.be/9BdfDb7jzIo

Home networking is Magic, dark magic. I could setup an Active Directory with shared central folders faster than I could copy a file from one to the next. Maybe setup a shared folder on all PCs open to everyone. Maybe.

In one set of directions, it said to click here and here and then click on "Upgrade to Windows 10 Pro." That's when I stopped reading.

I don't have the whole D drive on my NAS, just backup files. Yesterday, I copied most of the D folders to an external drive. I'll copy them to the SSD in the other computer today.

I've seen online experts say about the same thing. "Easier said than done."

Right now, I'm copying folders from an external HDD to an internal 4TB SSD.

Thanks… but my problem is from the other direction. In your example… I can do that, on the PRO PC, copying a file to the HOME PC. What I can’t do is, when working on the HOME PC copy a file from the PRO PC. It is moving a file in the same direction (same from, same to)… but the limitation is accessing the PRO PC when I am working on the HOME PC.

I quit even trying long ago… when I began backing up all the PCs to the NAS. If I want a file from the PRO PC, I just get it from the NAS.

I copy files from my HOME laptop to the PRO laptop all the time.... Mine works both ways.
Those two are both HPs. Now my wife's DELL will not communicate with the PRO box and the PRO box cannot communicate with her laptop. Her laptop can see my laptop, but my laptop cannot get to her laptop.
Why can't they make this simple???

You've circumvented your problem well.

I use Windoze when I have to, I use Linux because it is easier to use. WinSCP is what I use on the PC side of things to transfer files. (Macs are easier because they are very Linux-like.)

Years ago I was at a networking conference and someone asked the presenter the fastest way to copy 100 TB from Los Angeles to San Francisco. His answer: Federal Express.

If I want to transfer a bunch of photos to another computer of ours I'll use a fob.
Encrypted WIFI takes forever!

My Macbook Air can see the Mac Mini, which is always on, when the laptop is home. It can connect to the Mini if I enter the Mini password, and then can see all the content of the Mini and all the drives connected to it, and can copy files from there to the laptop. (I don't think I've ever wanted to copy from the laptop to the Mini.) Both are M1 machines running Ventura. I have never been able to connect the Mini to a Win10 box sitting next to it, so I just use the thumb drive method when moving files between Mac and Windows boxes..
