This butterfly and its twin kept posing for me yesterday when I was looking for critters to photograph. It/they would sit on a leaf while I slowly walked toward it. After I got a few photos it would fly away but within a minute or two it would land about 3 feet away again begging me to take more photos. Of course I was happy to oblige.

Sorry for all the photos. They were just so darn cute.

Thank you bcheary. I thought moth too but when I looked it up it said a butterfly. Truthfully I have no idea and believe what Google tells me. Let's see what others have to say.

Fantastic!

Your critter is neither a moth nor a butterfly, but rather a skipper. My guess is Hesperia sassacus - "Indian Skipper."

I was a coleopterist, not a lepidopterist. I never saw a butterfly that fuzzy but then I was not out chasing butterflies or flutterbys as I call them.

Those are terrific pictures! Especially that first one which captures the personality of these creatures. Very well done!
Skippers used to be classified as a bit separate from butterflies for a very long time because of some significant differences. But more recently genetic comparisons has placed them firmly within the butterflies.
