I'm going through another of my late husband's boxes and found this. I have no idea what it is, but I know one or more Hoggers will be able to identify it. It's at least 40 years old.

Dial micrometer for measuring things down to around 0.001"
It is a caliper Use to measure thicknesses and diameters.
It's a vernier caliper intended for precise measurements.
Thank you all. Now I have to decide what to do with it.
It also looks like it may be a Craftsman brand.
A search on Ebay for:
6 “ dial calipers Craftsman
Reveals several selling in the $40.oo to $60.oo range.

Its a dial Caliper, a machinist or mechanics tool, worth about $20+ depending on the brand.
Not a micrometer, and not vernier.
6" dial calipers. They are now digital

I have a digital version. It's very convenient if you use it a lot. If you let it sit for a couple months between uses, it has a dead battery. So I have to remove the battery between uses. And the case doesn't have space for spare batteries. I think I'd prefer the dial version (although the digital version does SAE/Metric and the dial is only one or the other).
Used a vernier version in the far distant past but my eyes are getting to the point where the dial/digital version is essential.

I have digital US and or Metric
That reminds me I need to get a new battery for mine
It is a beautiful tool. Seek out a machinist or wood craftsman if you seek to donate it. Great find. Best wishes
I have a Brown & Sharpe dial caliper that I bought new when the digital versions were just coming out. I do not have faith in the digital versions of either the caliper nor the micrometers, just for the reason noted, the battery is dying then how do I know it is measuring accurately? I am old school that way, I trust the mechanical version just as I am skeptical of digital odometers. Too darn old to change!!!
