I am old enough to remember (ancient really) when presidential and vice presidential candidates were picked by party leaders in smoky rooms. That changed in the 1940s and the electorate had more say in who the candidate would be and this is what we got. In the old days the candidate had party standing and experience, he was a real politician and the primary voter got a choice of candidates the party selected. The candidates were more stable in those days and because of experience could but not always work together.

Why is it that people criticize Biden for picking Harris as his VP because of her gender and color, but don't criticize Trump for picking Pence as his VP because of Pence's gender and color? It is not about Harris's gender or race, it is about qualifications and ability, she has troubles managing her staff, how can she manage a nation?

VP’s are picked for one reason and one reason only. The candidate/party is targeting either an important swing state or a demographic (votes). Quite often they aren’t even communicating/working together by the end of the first term as in Trump/Pence and Biden/Harris.
