Only 272 of these were built. Only 5 remain. In a couple of these shots, a huge plane which was parked next to the F-82, intrudes into the shot. Nothing I could do about it. I wanted you to have that particular view of the Mustang. When this thing fired up, it made sounds from another dimension.

This thing looks like a "Made in my garage" home project after seeing a Lockheed P38. <smile>

I hear you. The F-82 offered several advantages over the P-38 that were attractive to the Air Force. However, the war ended before the F-82 was fully operational. It did see limited duty in Korea. The coming jet age spelled doom for many U.S. planes and this was one of them,

It is an interesting plane. It looks very much like they just took two P-51s and joined them together. In fact, though, the airframe was almost entirely re-engineered. There were some teething problems early on but that's to be expected. They started out using the braking system from the P-51. But the F-82 was much heavier and they had to completely redesign that feature.

Thank you. This plane could be piloted from either cockpit but usually was flown with the pilot in the left cockpit. On long missions, the right cockpit would carry the second pilot and they would share duties....the idea was to provide relief from the tension and strain a single pilot would incur. If the second pilot was used, he also was responsible for navigation.

Thanks, Mike.

Of the 5 F-82s remaining, 2 were prototype models. This is the one that was restored to flying status. It was once offered for sale, I believe, and the asking price was 12 million bucks.

Looks like the props turn in opposite directions from the pitch differences. Just like the p-38.
