Nikon has a new service advisory that says on some Z8 cameras while mounting a lens the lens cannot be rotated to the locking position.
You can go to the service advisory at Nikon's website and enter your serial number to see if your camera is part of the recall.
Nikon will repair your camera free of charge and pay shipping both ways.
There is also a problem with the Z9 involving the lens release button. Check your Z9 serial number in the service advisory for that problem.

While the Z8 advisory is brand new the Z9 advisory is not...it is from December of 2022...sorry
Just checked my Z8 and it's one of the affected ones.
The only Z lens I have for it at present is the 24/70m and noted no problems to date but will now take a closer look at the locking and also with the FTZ.

Hadn't even heard of that. Checked both my Z9s. Neither is affected. Lucky I guess.
Most new models have some teething pains, that is normal for ALL brands. Nikon will get it sorted out.
Cheers

But I have to wonder who they have made their lens mount parts.

Thanks for the update. Looks like I will wait a little longer to get back into the Z series. I do however have the 180-600 on order through NPS. One Z lens, no body yet.

That will be a handy purchase!
Locking the lens is so yesterday...
Might affect resales...
I'm sure Nikon will stand behind it and fix it, but Nikon's communications are sometimes slow. I'd want to be sure that it is not possible to do any damage to the lenses (which I think is remote, but worth getting assurances before using extensively)

Yes, the 180-600 will be, as long as I get a Z camera to go with it. I am still tossing up the Z8 or Z9. All I do anymore is wildlife.
The Z8 is much lighter and will fit in most packs a lot better. I bought the Z9 first, like it but it is heavy and big, and then got the Z8...love it! Fits my hand better and it just feels easier to carry. I'm getting really nice shots with it, autofocus is very good. I'll keep the 9 for a bit, most likely, and perhaps get a second 8. I heard that the price of used Z9 cameras was going down due to the Z8, something for you to consider.

A good friend of mine, who is also an excellent wildlife photographer, loves his Z9 for this purpose. He has passed over the Z8 as he believes the Z9 is a much better body for that work, especially with firmware 4.0. I use my Z9 bodies always for sports, along with my Z8 upon occasion. For other work I use my Z8 or my pair of Z6 bodies. Best of luck.
