Dave that is good to know and from what all has said about light it may represent a good value; especially the part about being able to locate your pictures.
Contrary to many beliefs I feel that the Photoshop Elements Organizer is actually more powerful than Lightroom on finding your photos. Most of the people who comment otherwise never learned how to use the Organizer in Elements. In addition to the Lightroom features it includes a facial recognition feature and the ability to search for images based on content similarity.
You'll also see people make a claim that Lightroom is nondestructive implying that Elements is. You can use Elements to be non-destructive. You simply let it use its deafault to save your edited image and it saves it as a photoshop file. That means it did not change your original file: it is there as a jpeg or RAW file as you started. It is very simple. If you want to be double sure you can "Save as" your edited image.
The people recommending Photoshop first over Elements must not have experience with Elements. I have and use all three.

OOps  Never mind
Hi. Personally, I like using PSE. Comprehensive and easy to use. Everything at your fingertups (literally) and the support structure is excellent. I have PSE10 at the moment but might well go for PSE11 in the very near future. It's Christmas and maybe the family are looking over my shoulder even as I write....hopefully.

I just bought Photoshop Elements 11 and I'm just now going through it. I have to say it was the cheaper of the two but I also have Photoshop CS5 as well. I think a lot depends on how much editing you want to do. In most cases Elements 11 would be enough.

You should download the trial versions of both and make that decision after you've tried them out. The best advice I can give is use Lightroom if you primarily need to improve the quality of your photo, use Elements if you primarily want to manipulate the content of your photo.
Lightroom is geared more to the technical quality of photographs while Elements is geared more the artistic manipulationof photographs.

Go with CS6. This is what the majority is using and you can get lots of free tips, tutorials and pluggins for CS6 than any other photo editing program out there. I currently have LightRoom 4.3, PhotoElements 11, CS6, GIMP, and Photomatix 4.2.5 for HDR photos.

If you have CS6, why are you bothering with GIMP or Elements? Sorry... it just doesn't make sense to me.
Elements was a gift and GIMP I already had and it's free.
