Just a quick note for any UHH having my problems with the R6. I have everything set correctly on my phone and the R6. I have downloaded and installed the 1.8.2 software. I finally turned off my house wi-fi and became dependent upon the Wi-fi and Bluetooth in the R6. I am successfully connecting the R6 and the phone. With the use of 1.8.2 software, I have getting no visuals on the phone. I can fire the camera to about 25 yards but I am getting no visuals. I suppose if I just set the lens on M, I can fire some shots off the phone. I was getting visuals on my phone with the older version of software but less reliable connection with Wi-fi and Bluetooth on the camera. My general opinion after doing serious trouble shooting with the R6 and the Canon app on the phone, you better buy a functional remote switch if you want to take remote photos. Maybe the R6 II has corrected the problems; I don't know.

Perhaps R6II did fix it. My R7 worked as advertised immediately and was easy to install.

Have you considered a CamRanger? Excellent distance and complete control of the camera controls including Liveview and downloading.

Trix, I should have considered the CanRanger over the Vello.

I have nothing but good things to say about the CamRanger. I haven’t compared its range against my camera’s WiFi, but I can attest that it works over at least 100’, plus, since it has its own battery, no worries about decreasing your camera’s battery’s usable time.

TriX, Thanks for the specs on the CamRanger. I wish I had known about it and the failure of the Wi-Fi and the phone on my R6. Guess there is another possible complication in using the camera remote...malware.

Actually, the CamRanger establishes an ad hoc WiFi connection just between the CamRanger and your phone, tablet or PC, so the peer to peer connection has no connection to the internet and no way to become infected unless someone hacks into the connection and gains access to your host via the unsecured WiFi port, which I find very doubtful (but not impossible I suppose)

I do not get "visuals" on my phone if I use the Bluetooth option. If I use WiFi instead, I get visual images. I have the R5, but I don't think that should matter as Canon Camera Connect works on my 80D, SX-700, and SX-60. I had the CamRanger for my older Canon cameras and rarely used it. It is now a $300 dust collector.

hcmcdole, Okay and thanks for your advice. I have both the WiFi and Bluetooth option turned on my R6. When I just try to use Bluetooth, the phone tells me it is switching to WiFi. Once I turn off the WiFi in the house, the phone can locate the WiFi on the camera and I can actually see the image I want to shoot and take the photo/s. Thus, my Bluetooth from the R6 is not being recognized and the phone has to switch to WiFi. Either the Bluetooth connect from my R6 to the phone is malfunctioning....or. I am certain if I send the R6 to Canon and wait two weeks, their tech will just indicate the R6 works in their office. Of course, I was hoping the CamRanger would resolve the entire mess. From what you indicate, the Cam would have been a major mistake. It is down to $200 now but I hate dust collectors. Maybe not that many R6 shooter try and use the remote system...

Once I bought my latest 2 cameras which both have WiFi, I started to sell my CamRanger, but until I do some real testing so I know that the built in WIFI paired with the manufacturer’s tethering ap both has equivalent range and equivalent functionality and speed as well as not dramatically affecting the camera’s battery life, I’m going to hang on to it. I KNOW the CamRanger works at long range, is fast (image transfers) and allows complete camera control, so before I declare it redundant, I want to insure the camera’s WIFI works as well. One thing for sure, Bluetooth is MUCH slower than the slowest WIFI link.

Trix, One of the best parts of belonging to UHH is the advise I can get from real photographers who test gear. A bunch of my wildlife shooting results in my camera shutting down and/or losing communications with my phone and my R6. The CamRanger does not allow you to see your subject, right? I absolutely have to have a device that will allow me to AF, shoot rapid fire, and will not lose communication at intervals. I can use binoculars to be certain of the action for my camera.

No the CamRanger DOES allow you to see the subject prior to exposure - just like Liveview. I use mine to sit inside on cold days with the camera on a tripod aimed on a branch near the bird feeder. When I see a bird in a pose I like, I jus trigger the shutter and it transfers the image to my laptop. I’ll try a comparison with the camera’s WiFi myself tomorrow and post the results - I’d like to know which works the best also.

The Canon app allows you to choose what kind of connection you want. I found that Bluetooth is not used for displaying the scene. I therefore always use the WiFi option. I guess it drains the battery quicker but well worth it. I just have to remember to always take extra batteries with me.

Max speed of BT is ~2Mb/sec, while most cameras (and CamRanger) are 100Mb/sec.

Good to know and makes sense why we shouldn't use BT (unless it is for battery saving).
