Many Nikon Z users have been asking for an affordable 200-600mm lens for wildlife and sports. Nikon has heard you and has a new 180-600mm f5.6-6.3 zoom lens.

IMHO this is a welcome and affordable lens for Z camera users and should pair nicely with the new Z8 too.

Cheers

This lens will be a huge success if it performs as well as the rest of the Z lens lineup. $1700 for an internal zoom super telephoto is crazy!

The price is right for sure, especially if it performs up to Z standards. Even though I have the Tammy 150-600 G2 I may pick one up just to compare. The new Z 70-180/2.8 looks good too.

Sooo, the news of Nikon's demise was a bit premature, huh?

Yes it was.

I was always one here in UHH that believed Nikon would step up to the plate and hit home runs again, and they have.

One of the silent factors not really talked about here is the longtime business relationship between Nikon and Sony. I always felt that it was in Sony's interest to help Nikon succeed in DSLRs and mirrorless with its Sony-made image sensors in the top Nikon DLSRs and in all its mirrorless Z cameras.

Also as Sony is a part owner of Tamron, it also helps Nikon with its new relationship with Tamron for third-party Z-mount lenses, and new Nikon-badged Z-mount lenses based on current Tamron E-mount lenses.

And if you look at the huge success of the Sony 200-600mm since its release in Aug. 2019, just look at the build, features and more of this new Nikon Z-mount 180-200mm and it is obvious the many design cues taken from that Sony 200-600mm lens.

Sony wants Nikon to succeed, and remain a great competitor to Canon. Nikon's top engineers working with some Sony tech and Tamron too ,will help with the success for Nikon mirrorless.

Not trying to take away any thunder from Nikon itself, but IMHO Nikon will always have Sony in its corner.

Cheers and best to you.

Yes I hope. My Z8 did not show up in time to take to Machupicchu. I hope the lens shows up before next Friday. I leave for Yosemite.

Fortunately, I don't have to photograph anything that far away.

Nikon is right where they need to be right now...trailing a bit behind...streamlining behind Sony.

It's less R&D for them...and they can still produce stellar glass...to a very hungry audience.

They should stick to this as long as they can...good job.

I agree. This lens at $1700 will fly off the shelves.
