I'm surprised no one has asked about the "1963 ½".

Apparently you all know.

But if not, this is why, via Wiki:

A lower, fastback roofline was added mid-year to improve looks and make the big cars more competitive on the NASCAR tracks with less drag and reduced aerodynamic lift at high speed. This 1963½ model, the industry's first official "½ year" model,[16] was called the "sports hardtop" or "fastback" (it shared this feature with the for 1963½ Falcon).[16] Galaxie buyers showed their preference as the new sports hardtop models handily outsold the "boxtop" square-roof models.

The 1963 "Boxtop" model. Not my photo.

Great shots of the black beauty! I wonder why they had to go and ruin it with that el cheapo steering wheel wrap. LOL

I agree about the steering wheel wrap, but that was a common, much-used accessory during that period. Maybe that's why.

These Fords were Runners in their day, especially when equipped with the 427! Was this car equipped with the 427 c.i.? The call out on the hood scoop reads 390, was this just a fake-out? I didn't remember that the 390's could be equipped from the factory with 2 4- barrel carbs. Personally, I think the car would show much better without all the chrome under the hood - "if it don't go - chrome it" as the old saying goes! Well photographed on your part!

I believe 390s had 3 duces in early 60s. 401 hp.

I've heard of 3 deuce 390's but never saw one. The couple of 390s that I had occasion to look at had Autolite 4bbls. Not exactly a performance carburetor. I got a couple of 390 eagles to replace the 427 ones on my front fenders, but they didn't fool anyone who knows cars. A great deal of difference on exhaust grumble.

The '63 1/2 fastbacks looked a million times better than the notch backs.

It might have been a 61 390 3x2 401hp and they were Hollys

My first “hand me down” car! I remember having to put a pen in the butterfly of the carburetor to get it started in the cold winter months. Good memories! Thanks!

Great example of a great car, but I'm wondering about the gauges under the hood. What are those for and why have them there?

From just looking at the car, I'd say the owner was most likely a drag racer, and a loner. The interior is all business. Consistent with a low buck race car. I have known other racers that have mounted gages under the hood as a time saver during tuning sessions between rounds. In the day, the car, interior, and under hood were probably not so pretty. But being so very proud of his ride, it looks like the owner has gone to a good bit of loving effort to make it match the dream of those early days.

Brings back a lot of memories KT. A very nice set. Kudo's to the restorer too! A lot of work went into this one.

Back eons ago, my SCUBA teacher had one. He replaced the engine with one from Willy's Jeep. He played with the transmission to make it run up to par with the original, but at a fantastically better fuel per mileage!

One of my all time favorites. Friend of mine had one with 427, 425 hp. You couldn't keep tires on that thing, what a car. Wish I had it now. Hard to come by these days.
