Hybrids don't have to be plugged in, do they? Gas engine and electric motor, right?

My 1st hybrid was a 2013 Toyota Prius Hybrid that did not have the available plug-in. I drove it 62 thousand miles. Never had to do any repairs on it. I then sold it. My wife asked me why I wanted a new car and I told her that I am now 87 years old and I don't want the Prius to be my last new car (it had 62,000 miles on it). That seemed to work and and then I bought a new 2021 Honda Accord EL-X without the plug-in The 2 hybrid cars seem to get about the same overall gas mileage . . . around 47 and 48 miles per gallon overall. The big thing I like best about the Honda is the wonderful cruise control that it has. I can set the cruise control at 50 MPH and drive in heavy traffic without my right foot on either the gas pedal and brake. It has a resume speed button that does almost everything. Try it. I think you will love it if you drive in city traffic as most of us do. The best mileage I have ever got in the Honda Hybrid is 72 MPH. I had to control my driving speed and acceleration rate in order to achieve that. Many of my friends do not believe that statistic . . . but believe me . . . it did happen. I think hybrid cars are mostly a stop gap until electric cars become more popular which I believe will happen when plug-in electricity fill-up stations becomes as popular as gas station fill-up is now. In the beginning of gas cars it took a number of years before gas cars overtook the horse and wagon but it did happen. Be patient and it will all happen.

Bought a 2013 Toyota Avalon Hybrid new, has 180,000+ miles, no expenses other than routine maintenance, great ride, averages 39 mpg.

It's interesting that you get better mileage on the highway than in the city, since our Prius is the opposite. We have made two trips from Arizona to Minnesota and back (1500 miles each way) many trips from home to Phoenix and Tucson (about 270 miles each way) and our mileage is always higher in town where the engine shuts down when you stop or just goes to battery when driving less than 25 mph. I once had a short discussion with Consumer Reports about this same topic, after they reported the same kind of results for my Prius. I said my experience was the opposite of their results and they responded that they "...test their cars under all conditions," and so of course I was wrong, and could not possibly be getting better gas mileage when the engine wasn't even running as much or as hard...

Not sure why the difference. Around town the car switches to gas when accelerating so the stop and go uses more gas. Even though the battery charges when using the brake it doesn't quite catch up. On the highway on some trips we have gotten over 70mpg. It varies some because of wind (head or tail) and also rain will cost some mpg.

I believe it. I regularly get 50+ with my 2015 Fit on trips of up to thirty miles. Of course, going up hills uses more gas.

I've heard of hypermilers getting over 80 mpg with a regular Prius. We can't really do that living in a rural mountain area, but I can drive to keep the mileage as high as possible. I have been over 65 mpg and average 61-62 in the summer.

Yes, Jerry, they don't have to be plugged in. My daughter bought a Ford C-Max Hybrid about 2 years ago and it has been very reliable.

Forty miles? For folks who live in the country, that could be a trip to town--no thanks!

For some that’s 1/2 of the way to town. I’m with you.

We have a Toyota Avalon Hybrid, and I like it a lot. It is not a plug-in hybrid, though. Sadly, Toyota dropped the Avalon line recently. But I'm 73 and with luck this will be the last car I ever buy.

I still say that EV's and Hybrids don't provide the exhilaration that a V10 or V12 provides.

Yeah, but transportation isn't supposed to be exhilarating.

I bought my 'last car' at age 78. 6 years later I'm considering another last car.

Uhh-h-h, NO with luck and God's blessing you'll live so much longer you will have to buy another car.

A hybrid would be my only choice. An EV would leave me sitting in the middle of nowhere with no options for a charge. EV range is also limited, particularly in cold climates.
A hybrid gives you the benefit of better fuel economy, long range and being able to 'charge' with a jerry can of gasoline.
