Sorry to hear this disturbing news. Here in California, we have a State Insurance Commissioner. Most insurance companies react very differently when contacted or threat of being contacted by the Insurance Commissioner. The Commissioner controls whether a company will do business in California among other duties. Years ago I had an issue with an insurance company. When I called them to try and resolve it myself they were aloof and really couldn't care and I was getting nowhere. Then, nearly the end of my conversation getting nowhere I said...well you leave me no choice but to file a claim with the States Insurance Commissioner's office. Boy did their tune change in a heartbeat. Almost immediately I was treated much differently and imagine that I was able to resolve with that phone call. I don't know if where you live they such a State Department but it would be worth looking into. Good Luck and I hope you resolve this soon.

I think your assessment of insurance being a scam is a stretch. Like any product, the buyer needs to not jump in with both feet before researching.
As for the London example, why would you expect that the school would qualify for a refund if they didn't have cancel for any reason? It’s not like Desert Storm wasn’t expected or close enough to London to be a concern for travel safety.

Home and car insurance are okay, but all those extra policies are generally a scam. I've known people who bought extended warranties, and not one of them got service when they needed it. There was always a loophole. As for the London trip, they offered a refund for war. The USA was at war with Iraq. Since Congress did not declare war, they would not refund the money. The company didn't specify that the country being visited was actually being bombed. Their reply was that this wasn't a "war."

When I bought a 1997 Civic, I hesitated to buy the rust coverage because I had known that so many rust insurance companies had gone out of business. The salesman assured me that this coverage was through the dealership itself. When I had a spot of rust appear, the service manager said, "Just call the 800 number." "The number you have called is no longer in service." $300+ down the drain.

I've known other people who had to cancel trips for various reasons, and their travel insurance didn't cover whatever their problem was. I'm not sure my life insurance will pay-out when I die. 😁

I did IT for a Corps in LA.
A family bought a life insurance policy for their vacation- double indemnity for travel.
The father was scuba diving, and was hit by a drunk in a boat.
It took those trolls maybe 5 minutes to determine that if that dad's boat wasn't moving, then he wasn;t traveling.
Denied.

They should file a complaint with their state’s Department of Insurance. That’s one of their purposes-to work out problems with insurers. If the insurance company is in the wrong they risk their ability to do business in that state if they don’t take care of the problem.

I always travel with Allianz travel insurance. I’ve had two claims over the years, one this past February, and never had a problem with reimbursement. The February reimbursement did take almost 30 days before I received their direct deposit into my checking account for over $5000, cost to rebook a flight cancelled because of weather.

We've traveled extensively and always used Allianz for our insurance. Had a couple of claims (one being medical) and never had a problem getting reimbursed. They've been good to us so we'll continue to use them.

Always buy your travel insurance from a third party company. Do not use the airline, cruise or tour companies insurance. They only cover limited aspects of the trip, not the whole thing. I use a company called SQUAREMOUTH which compares 3rd party policies for coverage and cost so you can tailor it to your needs. It also rates the companies on performance and customer feedback. I have never had an issue with any claim I have filed using this system.

Sorry for your troubles. I’ve had a bad experience with Tripmate. Took 7 months and the didn’t send a full refund. Other travel insurance was fine.

Before it went broke, I used to work at Sunmakers Travel Group. The tour packages we sold made us a lot of money and we outsourced the travel insurance for a small commission. Then we figured out how much money we could make insuring the trips ourselves and started our own company. My, how the money rolled in. If you really feel the need to insure your trip, shop around....prices vary.

I booked a trip with a well known company for a trip to Africa. The trip cost was $3500 and the insurance was $500. I had to cancel the trip due to flight problems. The insurance was stated as cancel for any reason.
This was over a month ago and after dealing with the insurance company and all of their BS they sent me back to the tour company. They told me it would take 30 days to get a refund.
I called them this morning and they said they wouldn't refund my money and would issue me a credit for another trip. I told them that I'm 88 years of age and this was my last trip. I asked to speak to their legal department and was told that there was no one I could speak to. I told them that I would seek outside help.
My first step was to file a claim with my credit card company. I did this today.
My next step will be to contact the Boston Business and file a claim with them.
So beware what you are buying. Needless to say I will never book another trip with them. If you want the name of the company PM me.

You forgot to consider Civil Service Small claims. I believe that You could sue for a $7000 max

Sorry to hear of your problem with getting reimbursed. We've done a number of cruises and generally get trip insurance thru the travel agent, always placed through Allianz. We've had to cancel two expensive cruises, one on the day of travel, and we've always gotten fully reimbursed for what we spent for the cruise and air travel. I do notice that the cost has gone up, maybe because of Allianz's experience with us as customers!

I've purchased extended warranties through the dealerships for three vehicles, a 1982 Olds diesel, 2015 Honda Accord and 2016 F-150. Only the Honda warranty was a waste of my money.

Most insurance is simply legal stealing or theft. No matter what company you deal with, they will do what they can to keep from paying out a claim.

I hope that wasn’t with Vantage World Travel. Try lodging a claim with the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office.
