I have not dabbled in Black and White very much in the past, my goal in the coming year is to attempt to become more proficient in that skill. To that end I have added Topaz B & W software. I'm looking for suggestions. Here are a few of my early attempts.

Looks to me like your already proficient...great photos!!!

As a suggestion I would say keep doing whatever you are doing , the photographs you have posted are excellent and I venture to say need no improvement at all. Great job!

Congrats! They are all really good shots the one I like the most is the reflection of the pond. I believe they all can use more drama by adding more contrast between the lights and the darks. I recently purchased Nik silver effects pro 2 and with the fine control points it's taken myB and Ws to a new level. Great job. Ed

The first one needs more contrast unless you are looking for non contrast. Just to even across the board. Something needs to stand out more. The rest are beautiful. The tree image in the water is beautiful

The critiques at my Camera Club, mytbcc.com, would ask "what is the story." Within this great documentation photo of what I thought at first was my kitchen, there are many stories; I pick one to tell. The story I chose was about mom. Mom nurtured her children and when they moved away; needing to nurture each spring she would grow her children from seeds and send them on their way to new homes, healthy maturing tomato plants. The story could be in a children's book with photos like this. Congratulations on telling this story about your mom who grew up in the scarey house in #3. I employed Topaz B&W and vignetted in PSP-X5. Wyle would you share how you added color to your rendition of #1 (looks great... and fun)?

Emm5, I can see you have not become addicted or exposed to Topazlabs.com plugins. Colnago used Topaz B&W. Do not waste money on updating your PS or PSE etc... invest in the full package of Topaz. I just watched a webinar and they gove 30% off. Checkout their website.

Check the main discussion section for the topic I started a few days ago: Thinking in Black and White. There are many thoughtful, detailed suggestions and several photos. I love your stream for the difference in textures and your pond reflections for the simplicity of composition and subject.

B & W images can invoke some very dramatic feelings when everything comes together. A truely good B & W image is one where the conversion enhances the image or highlights an aspect of the image not as easily recognizable in the color version.

Of the 4 images you have converted it appears that you have used the same conversion process for all 4 pictures. The process you have used has worked very well on images 3 & 4, but so much on the first 2. Lowering the exposure and enhancing the contrasts in the first photo could invoke a feeling of a place in hibernation or waiting. That would go very well with the content of the image. The second picture is going to be really tough as there is little contrast to work with and it is difficult to determine what feelings you want to portray by performing the conversion.

Just my simple opinions and maybe something to think about.
