Good captures! What tools did they use to "paint" their colorful and detailed works of art? You didn't do too bad yourself. What camera were you using to make these images?

The carpets remind me of the Tournament of Roses parade and the floats made for only that specific purpose.
Digital photography has changed, both in how many photos we can take without paying for developing, as well as how the years since your trip have changed cameras. All in a good way!
The carpet-makers are amazing with beautiful creations you have shared with us.

I agree with everything you say in regard to those carpets. And I thank you for your kind words about this and my other Antigua posts.

They mostly did this with their bare hands, especially their finger tips. For more delicate work they used some pointed object like a stick or a spoon handle.

As for my camera, this was about twenty years ago. It was a five MP Minolta something or other very primitive bridge camera.

I also don't understand. You mention grass. You mention sand. But I don't get how they are done or of what material.

First they measure and draw an outline of a rectangle in the street. Then they pay down a base of one or a mixture of the materials I described. The use brooms and their hands to make this base as true as possible. Then they take colored sand or sawdust or whatever and either carefully drip it onto the bade in some pattern, or they lay out stencils and drizzle it through them. They use their fingers or sticks or random objects to trace grooves around the subsequent designs to give them depth. They sometimes also place flowers or eggs or toys or other symbolic objects on their designs. The whole process takes several hours ... not counting planning and coorrdinating the whole enterprise and obtaining the materials.

Think of a sand painting, or a decorative cske, but with s variety of ingredients.

My wife and I got up real early the next day to watch the creation of what turned out to be really magnificent works of art. Digital photography was new to all of us then, and I embraced the fact that I now had so much "film" with which to take pictures. finally, I felt, I was kind of on a par with those National Geographic photographers who could take all the pics they wanted. All I needed now was just a little more talent.

Anyway, we walked block after block taking photos of all we saw, from the delicate construction to the completed products, and I wound of with hundreds of usable photographs ... even after all the really vicious editing my wife and I endured. (Editing always breaks my heart.) Even after that, I had to get it down to the few I could post here, so what you are about to see is kind of random.
