As they say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I've seen a lot of beautiful cars, but for my money, this one ranks #1.

It's a 1955 Mercedes 300 SLR. Mercedes brought it over from their corporate museum to show it exclusively at the Amelia Island Concours.

This is the race version of the 300 SLR. Mercedes also made a street version which was not quite as streamlined. Both are beautiful cars, but this is the rarer of the two models.

I don't know that I could choose the "most beautiful car in the world". There are many contenders. But, I can understand what you're saying black mamba. It's so subjective...when someone says they like your choice, BUT... That just means that there's another personal opinion coming up. Something that we're all entitled to. There are many beautiful cars out there, past and present. I do like this Mercedes a lot though. It's kind of like a wife. I think mine's the most beautiful woman in the world. You may not. Subjective!

I posted a set on the coupe version of the 300 SLR several days ago. Someone did mention the 142 million dollar sale of a coupe....bought one of the two that Mercedes had hung onto for a long time.

Another guy paid 70 million for a 1963 Ferrari 250 GTO ....one of 36 made. Crazy numbers, but if you have the bucks, what the hell.

Great B&W set, Mamba, but in my opinion the Jaguar XKE is the most beautiful car of all.

Hey, guy. I've always considered the XKE to be absolutely beautiful. Probably more folks would pick it over the 300 SLR. Another contender to me is the '63 split window Corvette...actually all of them from '63 through '67. It's just so subjective.

A quick story about an XKE. I had a college fraternity brother whose family owned a business that prepped most of the British cars that came into the port of Jacksonville....Jaguars, MG, Triumph and Volvo's as well. When prepping was finished they also shipped them out to the dealers. The XKE had just started trickling into the U.S.

My buddy called and asked a huge favor of me. A Jaguar dealer down in Cape Canaveral was desperate to get his hands on one of the first XKE's to hit our area. He needed to get one to a big-time client and the heat was on.
All of the trucks to get cars to dealers were booked solid. I was asked if I would drive that car down to that dealer, stay the night, and one of his trucks would bring me back to Jax the next morning. He was desperate and a really good friend. I agreed to do it.

A problem arose....we couldn't find the knob for the stick shift lever. The stick wasn't that long and had exposed threading on the top where the knob screwed down. I took out and gripped that stick anyway I could. After about 10 - 15 miles down the road, my right hand looked like a bloody mess. I finally took off my tennis shoe, put it over the stick and made my way down there. I collected on favors from him for a long, long time.

Ah, you did alright.... saved $10,000 a year in maintenance and another $10,000 a year for insurance.

That has always been my favorite Mercedes. A friend had one in 1958. Nice!

Very nice indeed.

Opting for B+W was very much the right choice here.
Some people don't understand B+W and you can't explain it to them. I've found this out over the years.

I was a Mercedes mechanic back in the 1980s. We never had one of these Mercs in the workshop but I did work on some other old models and I did quite a lot of engine and trans rebuilds.
Also, I have a silver gullwing diecast model. However, many years ago I was not home one day and someone with kids visited my partner and the parent didn't keep their kids under control and my car was out on display and so it was slightly damaged by the kids. So I put away in its box in a cupboard, where it has stayed ever since. If it were not for the damage I would have used it for making some photos. And yes, I too would have done some photos in B+W.
