Hello fellow Hoggers,

This morning I called into my local camera shop and made the decision to upgrade my 5D II and 5D III bodies for a new R7. Although I will have a basic run through of various settings when I collect it on Friday morning (the man in the shop uses both R6 and R7's) I am wondering if the kind people on here have any particular tips, hints, settings etc that they would like to share?
I'm guessing there is quite a leap in the technical features for an old 'un (68) to get his head around!
Off on a 3 week cruise around Europe and the Med on Monday so no real time to practice the finer points but will certainly try.
Thank you very much for any help and advice which you can offer.
Regards
Rob

I’m not a Canon user so I can’t offer any tips, but congratulations on your new camera.

You are also going from full frame to crop sensor, so the biggest thing will be "wide angle" won't be so wide and for touristy things you may miss that. Interiors and general scenes in narrow European streets etc. But with long lenses you will have more "reach".
I use mine for birds. I also have the RP full frame, the smallest, lightest FF around. With the small light RF 18-150 that is a great small, light weight general "Walk around" rig. Note, when you put an RF-s lense on a FF R body it automatically goes to crop mode. but it works, the EF-s lenses will not even mount on an EF full frame body.
And I still have my EF bodies, 2 full frame and 3 crop sensor. I will be selling or giving some of those to family members.

The EF to RF adaptors work great, I have the plain one and the one with control ring so I can use all my EF lenses on my R bodies. But no adapter to go the other way exists.

What do you mean you want "settings"? The exposure triangle works the same no matter what the body. I use my cameras all on manual, except ISO which I have on auto with preset limits. Most of my "settings" are for birds so I use high SS, f-stops for depth of field suitable for hummingbirds to ravens, etc. etc. My second most common shots are macro-bugs and flowers which probably are pretty much useless for a cruise and tourist in Europe/the Med. But the wide angle & dim interior light ability will probably be important on the cruise.

What kinds of pictures do you usually take?
If worst comes to worst just put it on A or on Scenes and snap away.

Being used to full frame only I would have gone for a FF R body with adapter for my EF lenses and just carry over my usual settings from the EF full frame bodies.

I have the 24-105 L in RF. The EF 24-105L is my favorite walk around on my EF bodies if I am not after birds. So I got one in RF but it is bigger and heavier than the R7 or RP bodies and sort of defeats the small light thing for carry around. The RF 18-150 is the choice for that and I got one of those as a kit lenses with one of my R bodies. Its image quality is just fine for general images as opposed to my bird and macro shooting where I am after max detail etc.

Is there a particular reason you are going from FF to Crop Sensor?
Except for distance shots from the ship I would think a FF with great wide angle capabilities and low light for interiors would be the best choice. The R7 is very good in dim light but doesn't do wide angle as well.

Being used to the two bodies you have the obvious R body would be the R5 but at $4K just for the body that is a bit pricey. But it is FF which is what you are used to using. I am dreaming of getting one, a guy not far from where I was raised in Western Kentucky posts a lot of superb small bird shots done with an R5. However back there you are working in fairly dense woodlands where you can't see the birds and they can't see you until you are well within FF range for small subjects.

I thank you Robert for such an in-depth and prompt reply. I had no idea that I was switching from FF to Crop. My EF lenses will be used via the Canon adaptor, typically the 24-105, an EF 50mm prime, 70-200 MkII. I am also getting the new 100-500 RF.
I usually take anything and everything from wild deer, boar, badgers and birds (I live just 400 yards from the edge of the Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire UK), portraits, landscapes, seascapes, Cornwall for calendar shoots etc.
I understand the workings of the exposure triangle and, although sometimes it takes a while to get there, I usually manage to work it out.
Thanks again for a very informative reply.

All your EF lenses will work just fine on the camera, personally I shoot with an R5 and only have two RF lenses and still use several EF lenses. I do recommend that if you do landscapes or city scapes that you purchase a 10-18 or 10-22 lens for ultrawide work as the crop factor will make all of your full frame lenses 1.6X longer than they were on your full frame cameras. You might also consider a battery grip and the purchase of a few more batteries, I use the EVF on my camera for everything including image review because it is amazing, the only downside is that it consumes batteries.

The R7 sounds like a wonderful camera, enjoy your move into mirrorless, you're going to love it.

I had both the 5DII and 5DIII and now have the R7. It is a game changer. I have the RF 18-150 and the 24-105 and I mostly use the 18-150 for its wider range on the low end and because it is a smaller lens. I was never a fan of auto ISO until I got the R7. Try it. It is hard to take a bad picture with the camera. I also have the R6II but find I use the R7 just as much. You will not regret it.

I went from a 5d4 and 7d2 to a R5. All my lenses are EF from a 50, 16-36, 24-70, 70-200, 100-400, 100 macro, and a Sigma 150-600 so the EF-RF adapter lives on the camera. With the advanced focusing on the R5, I’m still happy with the EF glass and have no immediate plans to purchase RF but I know there’s a GAS attack waiting/lurking somewhere. Enjoy your camera! I’m confident you’re okay for as long as you want to be.

I recently got the R50 to take places I was worried about taking my expensive A7R5. I enjoyed the R50 so much more, I sold the Sony. The Canon eye tracking is better because set to automatic it selects people, birds and other animals on its own. The inexpensive RF 100-400 makes for a fantastic, light BIF system. If you point your camera towards the bird the camera will find it in the sky and track it. Yesterday I used the R50 with the 18-150 to take photos of my grandson at soccer practice. I caught multiple bursts of him making goalie saves with every shot in perfect focus. Once you set who to track it rarely loses focus. It’s uncanny.

Previously I micromanaged my exposure settings switching from aperture preferred for landscapes to shutter preferred for animals and sports. The camera is so smart most of the time you can just leave it set on fully automatic and it identifies the subject type and selects optimum settings automatically. You should also experiment with using the touchscreen to make setting changes instead of the menu. It’s shockingly intuitive and fast.

The R7 should be even better than the R50. Have fun.

Hello Blurryeyed, thank you so much for the advice, I will certainly look at the wide angle lenses which you have recommended.
I will post some of the results here after the 10th June.
Rob
PS I don't think a battery grip has been designed to fit the R7 (yet!)

Hello AntonioReyna, robertjerl also recommended the 18-150 and it does sound good. I am looking forward to the advances made over the 5DII and 5DIII.
Thinking though that I may take earlier advice and keep the 5DIII.
Thank you for taking the time to reply

Hello 47 greyfox, thank you for replying, I am really looking forward to Friday and having a play with the new R7. Having only held it for a minute with the 100-500 lens attached, I am very impressed with how light it is.
Thanks again

My memory is catching up to my IQ. Not a good thing. Yesterday, I came across an article or YouTube, which said something to the effect that Canon has no plans to offer a battery grip for the R7 and a number of other “R” cameras. More info….

Hello bkwaters,
thank you for the reply. I am going to be relying heavily on the autofocus feature as I have some quite serious eye issues with the one eye I have. Tracking everything from birds of prey to a cricket ball at 85-90mph should give some great results.
So much to look forward to, I'm like a 5 year old on Christmas Eve.
