I was wrong about the road number and river name. As I said, it was a long time ago and my memory is not what it used to be. It was the Dolores river and apparently the roads have been renumbered. It's the road that gets close to Telluride (hwy 145). From looking at a Mapquest map it has grown up but I understand Telluride is a great place to visit. If by chance you get a little further north towards Montrose, the Black Canyon of the Gunnison is very interesting - a smaller version of the Grand Canyon. All places I would love to return to.

Thank you for the clarification. That's exactly the route we were planning to take up to Telluride from Durango. We're spending the night in Telluride and then completing the loop down the Million Dollar Hway back to Durango and down into New Mexico.

Hello all, I have been a member here for a while now and rarely post on this forum but I always admire how kind and helpful other photographers are on here. I'll be going to a wedding in Durango, CO in a couple weeks and am doing a road trip (via car) from Palm Springs for approximately 10 days. We're hitting the following places: Palm Springs, CA, Joshua Tree, Flagstaff, AZ, Durango, CO, Pagosa Springs,CO, Telluride, CO, Farmington, NM, and Sedona, AZ.

Question: Do any of you have any suggestions of some unique places or hiking trails to photograph anywhere near these cities? I'm a wildlife / landscape / astro photographer and have already done quite a bit of research in the different areas but am open to any suggestions that you might have for me. Thank you, in advance!

The old ATSF passenger depot in Flagstaff is still used by AMTRAK. Many folks find its architecture to be quite interesting. At one time, it had been painted some weird colors, but I believe it has been restored to its original cors.

Thanks, Larry! It is an interesting building and I'll check it out when we're there. We'll have an overnight in Flagstaff.

As a native Durangoan who still lives in Durango. It sounds like you are planning on driving the Alpine Loop, which is Durango,Silverton,Ouray,Telluride,Rico,Dolores,Cortez(Mesa Verde Maybe?) then back to Durango. With an overnight stop in Telluride? You will probably need to charge the Tesla in Telluride. I would check on availability for that. Durango only has one Tesla station, acccording to bing maps, Telluride shows one in the Mountain Village, none in downtown. There might be some E.A. stations you can use with an adaptor?
If you are doing this drive, I would skip the train ride, unless you really like slow smoky expensive trains.
I was hiking on Molas Pass(Above Silverton) last Sunday about 9500 feet. There is still a LOT of snow up there, and I heard Molas got another 10 inches on Thursday May 11th.

Hey Durangoan, that's EXACTLY the route we were going to take and that's good to know about the snow. Thank you very much. It's nice to hear from locals who know the area, well. Yes, we were planning on charging the Tesla at Telluride. We appreciated the suggestion about the train ride but we were probably going to pass on that due to time constraints. Are the roads cleared on Molas Pass after the big snow? Of course, we won't do that route if it's impassable for the Tesla. - Tom

The roads should be fine from Thursday's snow by now. It melts on the road pretty quickly this time of year. Of course, the weather up there, and in Durango, can change pretty fast. Layers are always good option for clothing.
Enjoy your stay! John
