Well...THANKS for all those ideas and I'm sure I'll get what I need to do from them. I have two weeks before we leave for a trip to the Cotswolds and North Wales where I expect to take a ton of photos, and knowing where I was when along all the country roads we will be driving on will be a great help to me.

You can link a newer Olympus/OMS camera to your phone with the O.I. Share app to add lat-long to the files on the camera. See the following video from Rob Trek:

I use method 2, but it doesn't work all the time.

Now there is a real answer to OP's question and thank you for posting that. But the burning question is do roaming charges apply? ;)

Other question is how old is his camera ? I do not recall that info being posted.

In the original post he said " I use my Olympus camera that's about 6-years old".

Right. I didnt really state things properly anyway. The actual question would be:

Is his 6 year old Olympus new enough for the smart phone hook ups that some of the replies have recommended ?

One reply refers to "newer Olympus", but just how new is that ? I use mkII level of Olympae, but Ive never paid any mind to phone hook ups, so I wouldnt know just how recent a camera must be for that.

How then do you sync the two so that the D850 picks up the data from the iPhone. Traveling out west in 2 weeks and solving for this is on my list.

I purchased a GPS logger for just this purpose (not a tracker). Turn it on for your day and it will run for 8 hours. Either press the button to record the waypoint, or just let it run. Another reason to keep your camera set to GMT, and keep the two devices nominally synched.

The unit I bought will either outpost a table of waypoints or a map. Software was a bit quirky, with a short learning curve each time. Output the files to your photo archive.

I do a good deal of traveling and take a good deal of photos for my artwork. A problem that I experience is that sometimes it's just impossible to remember precisely where the photo was taken and as I do architectural subjects that's a real inconvenience. I use my Olympus camera that's about 6-years old and I was considering a new Olympus camera since I have some very effective lenses for my purposes. But...Olympus doesn't seem to offer any camera that would permit me to use the lenses I have AND give metadata of a photo's location. Is there an easy method of addressing this issue that I'm not aware of other than taking cumbersome notes or also using my iPhone constantly to also photo a spot that WOULD log the location? Thanks for any help that might address this without my having to settle for a new camera that would be unnecessarily costly and not give me the use of my Olympus lenses.

Looking at the date taken usually helps me.

6 weeks out west. Probably use phone and or a photo of a card at the end of one location to the next. 5 states.

Perhaps the iPhone is your best bet. Organize photos into folders that include the location info if it's important to keep track of that data.

I just...remember good spots. I can go back years later...no problem.
I slow down when I am out...there.
That's usually enough.

You can just buy a stand alone GPS tracker for a few hundred bucks...use it anytime...without camera.

Sony cameras can pair with the Imaging Edge app on your phone {free download} to write GPS data to the metadata. I have also used an app "GeotagPhotos2" which synchronizes a time based gps log of your phone's location with photos and writes the metadata to your picture files. This requires that you have the camera clock closely synchronized with the time on your phone.

I am assuming you have an Olympus DSLR 4/3 camera with the Zuiko lenses. If that is the case any of the resent or current Olympus E-P or OMD micro 4/3 bodies will accept your current lenses with a 4/3 to micro 4/3 adapter. There are several manufactures including Olympus that manufacture these adapters with full electronic connection between the lens and the camera body.

I try to take a photo or two with my iPhone, as it will record the location. Then I can reference that location with my photos from my camera.
