Get your prescription at Costco or any other optometrist and order online. I use eyebuydirect.com. Last pair I got were progressive lenses and lens and frame were $76. Nice quality frames, too.

Every 2-4 years when I need a changed glasses prescription I buy a $60 Costco membership. I save enough on glasses to pay for it with more than that left compared to the prices at all the big name glasses places.

I turns out that NY State and three other states have laws regulating over-the-counter reading glasses. NY passed their law in 2021, I believe. They can be sold in NYS up to 2.75 strength. 3.0 and stronger can not be sold or shipped to NYS.

There was a bit on 60 minutes a while back. Frames are manufactured by one company in Italy. They make all the frames for every company. There are now new places like Warby. The send you three frames to pick from (plastic). They put the prescription lenses in and send the glasses back to you. Don’t know how long. Ad is on TV. Not the most stylish but costs under $100. I’m next.

Costco is selling readers from Foster Grant for $18.95 / a package of three similar styles. They offer a range of styles. Right now they are on sale at $13.95 per pack. My problem is both my wife and I need them in 3.0 strength which are not carried in my local Costcos here in NYC. I tried ordering them on line and it came up saying they could not deliver them to my area. I guess I need an out-of-town friend to order them for me and then send them along to me! So I'm making do with 2.75 readers.

I live in CT and would be happy to pick some up for you at my local COSTCO
I go there about once a week

A few years ago I took a chance and did a google search for mail order glasses. I've tried several & I'm very satisfied with the glasses I received. Early on, I took the glasses to my Ophthalmologist and had them check the prescription. The lenses were exactly as prescribed.

BUT - - Nobody's 100% perfect. A couple years ago I went to Costco with my prescription and ordered some glasses. The minute I tried them on I knew they were wrong - and the sales clerk could even tell they were wrong. I re-ordered and wore the glasses for a few days and returned them - they just weren't right. I went back to mail order and was satisfied.

Just yesterday I got a new prescription and ordered sunglasses from Zenni. Total cost including $4.95 shipping was $60. Plastic frame, bifocal and photochromic lenses.

That's nice of you to offer! A friend just advised me he is in the works for a trip to see a mutual friend of ours out in New Jersey. I'll get him to stop at a Costco that is on the way!

What's the deal with getting eyeglasses?

I have glasses from my union. Not a bad deal. But I found something better in Brooklyn. The store is a city block away from Maimonides Hospital. The store is simple. All the walls are covered with frames. Pick a frame or two or three. Bring them to the counter with your prescription from the ophthalmologist. In a half hour later you have all three pairs for about $100 each! As for me being a curious sort, I asked. To begin, they buy all the sellout from other stores at discounted prices. Usually, frames are expensive. When you buy Prada or Gucci frames you pay premium prices. This store buys last year’s designer frames. Who cares? No body can tell the difference between last years and this years frames. They have all prescription lenses that they grind to the frame. This is because they have the lens grinders in the store. There are major drawbacks. They don’t do online, they don’t deliver and they close early on Friday, all day Saturday and Jewish Holidays.

When I needed a slight correction, the glasses were cheap. I DID have a pair for every outfit. Then they started to get more expensive.

Over 20 years, my prescription became less and less until I was 60 when I no longer needed correction, just some magnification. Off to the dollar store.

Then about 10 years later, the prescription was needed because I needed different magnification to read a book vs the computer screen. I think my next prescription is going to expand to distance correction, too.

Aaah, the benefits of ageing.

Ophthalmologists-the true eye doctors - have no reluctance to give you the prescription to take anywhere for eyeglass construction. Shop around and realize the major cost is the frame.

My son's glasses - $195 with the exam. It will take about a week for delivery, so he'll order a two-day pair online, just to be sure he has them.

What's the deal with getting eyeglasses? When I was wearing glasses, I'd walk into the store, get an exam, and pick up the glasses in a few days. My son wants new glasses, and it takes weeks to get an appointment. After that, it could take up to two weeks to get the glasses. Wal-Mart gave him the earliest appointment - a little over week after he called - but it could still take up to two weeks to get the glasses after that. He'll wait for the glasses and use the Rx to order glasses online with two-day delivery.

And another thing! The prices! The frames consist basically of three pieces of plastic - for $100 or more. The lenses are two pieces of plastic that are ground by a machine in seconds. They cost even more than the frames. The Daily News did a study of the eyeglass industry years ago, and they confirmed what everyone already knew: we're being grossly overcharged.

Since having my cataract surgery, I buy my glasses from The Dollar Tree for $1.25.

Probably 90% of the Eyeglass frames worldwide are made by an Italian Company called "Luxottica" they manufacture almost all the so called "designer" eyeglasses. Since they have a virtual monopoly worldwide they can charge what they like. I owned their stock for a while. They made huge profits as a monopoly does. Oakley, Sunglass Hut , Rayban, Pearle vision and Lens Crafters etc all owned by Luxottica

If you have a pair of glasses that are quality and you like, a number of places will fit new lenses and prescription to them at a reasonable price. I've used LensCrafters for this twice now. They charge $50 but price goes up fast if you want bi-focals, progressives, photochromic and so on.
