Costco is selling readers from Foster Grant for $18.95 / a package of three similar styles. They offer a range of styles. Right now they are on sale at $13.95 per pack. My problem is both my wife and I need them in 3.0 strength which are not carried in my local Costcos here in NYC. I tried ordering them on line and it came up saying they could not deliver them to my area. I guess I need an out-of-town friend to order them for me and then send them along to me! So I'm making do with 2.75 readers.

I had an eye-exam late last year for the first time in 30 years; I’ve been using drug store readers. The eye exam results came up with the same strength as the readers I’ve been using. I’m still glad I had the exam as I now know there are no other problems.

I'll have to look around for that kind of price! Walgreens, Duane Reade, CVS, etc. sell readers in the strength we need but the price is exorbitant.

After my cat surgery I bought some readers at 1.5 and 2.5. I hated the 2.5 because every thing past a foot or two was extremely blurry and made me dizzy and disoriented when looking at anything past that. I could read small print easily with them however. The 1.5 was much less bothersome when not reading but small print was not clear. When my surgeon did my prescription for readers, both eyes were 2.5. My wife said I'd get used to this, I hope she's right.

My wife just got her a new pair a month ago at a cost of $850. Hearing aids and eyeglasses are the biggest rip-off ever.

I read an article a few years back about how most of the 'chain' eyeglass stores are owned by one company. That may have changed a bit since then, with some new online sources.

A significant number of eyeglass outlets are now owned by one company - Luxottica - an Italian company. Costco for instance is independent and not owned by them. Luxottica with a semi-monopoly has elevated prices beyond reason
. Optometrists are usually independent but tend to hold onto the prescription to steer you into their optical to make a profit there. Ophthalmologists-the true eye doctors - have no reluctance to give you the prescription to take anywhere for eyeglass construction. Shop around and realize the major cost is the frame.

What's the deal with getting eyeglasses? When I was wearing glasses, I'd walk into the store, get an exam, and pick up the glasses in a few days. My son wants new glasses, and it takes weeks to get an appointment. After that, it could take up to two weeks to get the glasses. Wal-Mart gave him the earliest appointment - a little over week after he called - but it could still take up to two weeks to get the glasses after that. He'll wait for the glasses and use the Rx to order glasses online with two-day delivery.

And another thing! The prices! The frames consist basically of three pieces of plastic - for $100 or more. The lenses are two pieces of plastic that are ground by a machine in seconds. They cost even more than the frames. The Daily News did a study of the eyeglass industry years ago, and they confirmed what everyone already knew: we're being grossly overcharged.

Since having my cataract surgery, I buy my glasses from The Dollar Tree for $1.25.

I wear bifocals, blended, glass, same metal frames last 35 years. Blended means no difference between powers , a smooth transition, like wearing regular lenses . Glass means no fn scratches, they last ( no coatings to scratch ). Metal frames mean they fit the same and last a long time. Remember get blended glass, might pay more but will not scratch like plastic.

Wife and I also. They work fine but seem to migrate and then flock together, not where you are though.

will pick up my new glasses from costco this week. United health care picked up the cost of the exam ($109) and a $100 of the price of the glasses. This is the first time for the coverage.

Some blame it COVID but my take is that they want us to think that they are swamped with customers so we should feel privileged to be able get an appointment. And their prices are pure greed like most other outlets.

I think the eyeglass business has always been a racket and, like you, since cataract surgery I wear nothing but dollar store glasses.

I think you can walk in to the optometrist at COSTCO and get an exam any time without too long a wait.
