What's the deal with getting eyeglasses? When I was wearing glasses, I'd walk into the store, get an exam, and pick up the glasses in a few days. My son wants new glasses, and it takes weeks to get an appointment. After that, it could take up to two weeks to get the glasses. Wal-Mart gave him the earliest appointment - a little over week after he called - but it could still take up to two weeks to get the glasses after that. He'll wait for the glasses and use the Rx to order glasses online with two-day delivery.

And another thing! The prices! The frames consist basically of three pieces of plastic - for $100 or more. The lenses are two pieces of plastic that are ground by a machine in seconds. They cost even more than the frames. The Daily News did a study of the eyeglass industry years ago, and they confirmed what everyone already knew: we're being grossly overcharged.

Since having my cataract surgery, I buy my glasses from The Dollar Tree for $1.25.

I recently had cataract surgery. I'd worn glasses for distance for 56 years but always had perfect close up vision. After the surgery, it's the reverse, perfect distance but can't see jack close up, and need those darn readers. I love the perfect distance vision but hate the close up stuff. I should have spent the extra money and got both near and far vision corrected.

I do like buying glasses for a $1.25 at the Dollar store though, sure beats several hundred at the glass places. I had recently bought replacement lenses for my $300 glasses on-line at LensCrafters. They will put new prescription lenses in your old glasses for around $50 (and up). I just had my old lenses replaced with Bi-focal's, clear on top, magnifiers on the bottom, on sale for $80. I hate them. Hard to read with, have to tilt my head up and look down to read!

I do like the $1.25 glasses however, as far as look and feel goes, they are fantastic and can't believe the sell for so cheap. I bought 6 pairs and still never have them around when I need them. One pair of my old distance glasses and I always had them with me. Distance glasses I always wore unless I was reading. These magnifiers I can't wear unless I'm reading because everything past a few feet is blurry as all get out and makes me dizzy. I thought I didn't read much until now. I read WAY more than I thought I did.

That was last year's excuse.

Frames for glasses have been grossly over priced for years, some time in the early 90s I met a young lady who worked for a frame mgr. she told me the cost of make a plastic frame was under $3 the cost to the public at that time was over $30 for a cheap pair.

COSTCO usually has a optometrist who rents from COSTCO and then you pick out your frames from COSTCO. I was able to get an exam within a week’s time and my glasses were delivered in a week.
Great exam and great service on the frames. You can get your glasses adjusted while you shop.
I highly recommend COSTCO for glasses.

Absolutely! I got a complete exam, two pairs of glasses with actual titanium frames for about half of what one pair with plastic frames from my old optometrist cost.

Hearing aids are another great Costco bargain. Great selection and service and unbelievable follow-up service.

Jerry, they make eyeglasses with zoom...! $45 Amazon

In USA eyes are examined with equipment not changed much in over a hundred years. In Argentina when I was there my eyes were examined by a computerized instrument that measured the lens and profile of the eye and prescribed lenses. Never did any one ask me which is best 1 or 2 ... 2 or 1... how backward we are.

"The history of the phoropter, as a binocular refracting device which can also measure phorias, ductions, and other traits of binocularity, ... starts in the mid-1910s,"
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phoropter

Ever consider how with binoculars the eye lens has a dial for best focus... how simple... how effective.

the problem with cheap glasses are that the TWO EYES you have may not be equal vision and cheap glasses may cause the other eye to go bad because of the wrong lens used.

I have always generally been against most price controls. Having said that . . . I wonder if a careful re-examination of this whole subject should be done. If we rely on business to price everything fairly . . . we may end up with more companies like Luxottica (did I spell it right) that control almost everything in glasses and price "as they wish".

Compared with the rest of the industrialized world, yes, we are backward. How sad. The problem is that CEO won't make as many millions if they improve products and services.

Friends of ours spent a couple of weeks in Turkey recently. While there, the woman broke her arm. She got it taken care of and paid "out of pocket." That was a total of $45. When she got home and went to her regular doctor, he was surprised and the excellent quality of the work done.

When I got my eye exam for cataract surgery the nurse used two devices to determine how to make the lenses so I could see distance. They never asked which is best 1 or 2 like an optometrists does. I wondered why they didn't use those devices when measuring your eyes for glasses? I meant to ask my eye surgeon about that but didn't. He used the old equipment after the surgery to give me a script for readers. Whatever she did to measure my eyes for distance worked perfectly. Unfortunately whilst fixing my poor distance vision, they screwed up my close up vision, as predicted. I really, really wished I'da looked into correcting both near and far vision.

When I moved to where I live now the house size, condition, price as well as the beauty and safety of the neighborhood were some of the requirements when looking for a home... but the number 1 requirement was a Costco within less than a 10 minute drive!

Same here, but I just started using them this year. I'm very happy with the exam and the free glasses and will be using the VA from now on.

Well worth the drive for a lot more than eyeglasses
