Gyroscope Stablizer

I joined a meet-up group last night in an amusement park filled with holiday lights. One of the photographers had a Nikon with a gyroscope stablizer, claiming he didn't need a tripod to take night pictures of the lights. Pictures are being posted on the meet-up site now and his photos are by far the best. Has anyone heard of this or does anyone use one?

It seems you can make on yourself though for around $100.

The guy at the photoshoot said he bought it used for around $1,000. It also looked heavy attached to the bottom of his camera and he carried a battery pack in a shoulder bag. I don't love carrying a tripod, but this looked worse.

That's a tough decision, but would you really want a used gyroscope? I think I'll consider a new one. Either that, or I'll put gas in my car for a year. :D

Wow! They use them for taking pictures from helicopters, but I thoght they were seriously expensive.
